Arctic To Atlantic... A Trans USA Ride...

Thoroughly enjoyed that and as a newbie to the world of Tosserdom it was a great read.

Could visualise some of the route as I've riden some similar if not the same roads around the Jasper area of Alberta, the only difference being the Army kicked me and 5 others out of a 4 tonner with a map and told us to be in a certain place to be picked up 5 days later. Some of those roads are challenging on a bike with an engine, mine had pedals 8-)

:clap :clap :bow :bow

Just read this from start to end while waiting for a delivery this morning. What a fantastic ride report - truly inspiring. Wonderful photography, wonderful prose and a wonderful trip :beerjug:

What a fantastic trip, but such an excellent write up, and superb photos.

I have done several road trips acroos the USA and done the Dalton on my Tiger, and this brought it all back.

Guys, I'm glad you enjoyed it and that it either brought back memories or inspired you...

I had a great time during the ride and reliving it as I did the report...

Thanks again for the kind comments - makes all that time sorting photos and writing it feel worthwhile.

Wherever and whenever you ride - have fun.

One thing I would like to hear about , is the amount of stuff you took and your kit list for the trip. I found that when I did my first big trip (like everyone else from what I read!) I took far too much stuff, and did abandon much of it on the way.
I ended up throwing away spares, and camping stuff and clothes to get the bike weight down ( I should have gone an extreme diet before I went.)
Have you got it down to a bare minimum which you stick to.

Have you got a map showing your total route. I did one (2 really, one for alaska/yukon and one for the US) and have it on my garage wall for reminiscing.....

See first post in this report for a map of the route... There is also one on my website. Link in first post too. There is also one, alongside several others, on my "den" wall at home...

With regard to the things i took i worked things out pretty well before I set off... Numerous lessons learned from reading other reports and hearing horror stories of overloaded bikes ensured I was quite careful...

Admittedly tools and spares were carried unnecessarily..! But then again, if I hadn't taken them I was bound to have needed them !!

It all packed neatly using Eagle Creek cubes and allowed me to take just the bits I needed into each Motel or Hotel...

Packing list will be added shortly...

Reading this has made me think, I've always got a reason why I can't have a big trip whether it be time, money or indeed both .
I now need to think how I'm going to do it.

Great write up Simon, I now feel like my recent trip to Morocco was like nipping to Tesco for some milk !

Truly inspirational and shows anything can be done, you just need the bottle to get up and go !

Also read your thread on your planned RTW trip next year, looks awesome, best of luck with that !

Thanks for keeping us entertained.

Simon,

After reading this thread from start to finish, over 2 hours of fantastic writing I must say it is without a doubt amazing !

The pictures and write up is as if I was there myself, living the same journey. You have explained it extremely well and have covered it all in such great detail.

Thank you for sharing your journey... very jealous !!

BTW What seat is that you have on your GS ?? I want one !!

I've also come to the conclusion that the GoPro mounted Camera is defiantly a great piece of kit. I'm defiantly even more determined now to get away in April 2011 !

Have been reading this thread on the Dempster highway etc during the winter and it is interesting to see how the same area looks in the snow compared to your report.

funny to see the old frost bitten toe again !

Glad to see this seems to have a "long shelf life" and people are still reading it !!

But the most pleasing thing is that people are still getting inspired by it...

There are many other reports to be found on the advrider website - that's where I did a great deal of my research.

Thanks for all the comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed it...

Simon, for some reason I've only come across this thread today. I'm enjoying Oisin's current RR but yours is my dream trip in pics and words. Fantastic.

The Yosemite, Bryce, Vegas section is so familiar from a trip in 2008, but only in a rented tin box. I'm more than a bit jealous. The only way I can do anything like this is to wait 19 years until retirement, but I can't wait to spend some of my lump sum on a tour of every state in the union.

Thanks ever so much for a superb RR.

I was ready for bed, but now nearly two hours and half a bottle of J & B Rare later I'm all horned up for another trip misen. Thank you Simon for sharing your superb photo's and wise and informative words with us. If you don't get folks motivated with your excellent 'Ride Report' then they have no blood coursing through their veins ;)

Thanks Steve... Glad you enjoyed it - but you should be out and about on a glorious day like this... Doing a reality rather than virtual ride mate !!

Simon,

Came across this, missed it earlier in the year. Brilliant! photographs, journal all excellent. Like everyone says - inspirational, really makes us all think about "making it happen".

Safe riding and thanks again

Rob

How did I miss this?!

Fantastic report - really well written and photographed. To my mind, this is what a trip report should be. I'm not a great fan of the recent fashion of just posting a video and calling it a trip report - on their own they aren't trip reports.

This however, is a cracker :thumb2
