The weekend in the Ardennes couldn't have been better, superb weather (once the mist had cleared) and fantastic roads.
After a very calm crossing we left Calais at 12:00 on thursday and blasted down the motorways to Malmedy. I had booked a B & B for the weekend in Longfay just to the north of the town.
nice rural setting and very pleasant people.
Friday morning we went into Malmedy for a look around and the first beer of the day. A memorial to the civilians killed in the (mistaken) air raid is found next to the church.
Riding on to Stavelot we found our first peice of military hardware.
then on to Baugnez and the site of the infamous massacre and the American memorial. A museum near the site is due to open this December.
A Sherman tank on the road into Ligneaville, ironically named after a general infamous for conducting his own scorched earth policy.
We then decided to detour from the main battlefield tour and took a ride down into Vianden, Luxembourg along the Our valley. Riding back through Bastogne ond on to the B & B.
On saturday we went to La Gleize where we found this Tiger tank and a museum well worth a visit.
The Tiger had recieved a little combat damage, but not enough to stop it ! it had simply broken down.
By this time Kaz had had enough of the battlefield stuff so we took a ride up to Aachen through the Hautes Fagnes.
Sunday and time to leave for home, set the sat nav to 'avoid major roads' and on to Huy then Namur. Then more motorway back to Calais with a brief stop over in Ieper.
Think I might swap the GS for one of these:
