I picked my new (to me) 08' GSA yesterday.
This morning I stopped at my regular Tesco and set about filling the huge tank. I was showing 40 miles remaining so I expected to put in 30 litres. The pump stopped at 36 litres!!!!
To be fair I did take my time and brim it, but still. Does this mean the remaining 40 miles was a lie? (possible, I've sent the threads), even so its still 36 litres!
Or are Tesco getting the metering wrong in their favour?
Thoughts?

as a past employee of tesco i can assure you (particularly a they pay my pension each month) there is no skulduggery going on here
Every Little Bit Helps :beerjug:

On just a gs I've manged 10 miles over the 40 warning and still the tank wasn't empty I had gone on to extreme economy riding mode.

If you think they are wrong report it to trading standards.. best way then if they think you are correct they will calibrate and check....

Sorry just saying solve the issue not whine... you can also ask if they investigate for the result...

But on the other hand your tank could have expanded slightly....

To get 36 litres in you must have been running on fumes:eek: I've had 35 in mine so I guess 36 is do-able.

There is a rubber lip on the underside of the filler hole and if you remove this, you can get a few more litres in that standard so I'm guessing your's will have had this taken out.

Never trust your trip computor 100% and you will soon get used to it.:thumb

Can you honestly imagine a company the size of Tescos diddling the calibration in their favour?

They would almost certainly get caught out and the fallout and bad-feeling from such practices would cost them millions. I'm no big fan of Tescos but I just can't imgaine them taking the risk.

When you fill up set your trip, Do a sum e.g I get 50 mpg approx therefore I should expect to put in 6 gallons @ 300 miles or 6 x 4.543 = 27.26 litre

The fuel gauges on these bikes are notoriously crap so go back to basics like most of us did when we started riding and the "Old Hands" taught us these little mysteries

HM customs test filling station metering systems frequently and the pump suppliers go to great lengths to make sure that the accuracy remains there for MILLIONS of litres pumped

Tescos dont routinely calibrate their pumps, and if they are faulty can do this. I got an indicated 40l in my car when it normally clicks off at about 37, and then looked at the needle to see only 2/3rds of a tank. The pump was cavitating air and fuel, and sounded funny while I was pumping.

Paid for it, got them to shut the pump down, and got some names to give to trading standards. They went down, inspected, and found it wrong. Got a refund from tesco for the transaction, and an apology.

Both Trading Standards and Tesco rely on these things being reported. In the long run they are onto a winner, as the average person adding say £20 or £30 won't notice until they find out a week later they were short served.

Your typical fleet driver filling up his 5 series for a week on the motorways will be up the shell/bp garage getting points for it.

Tescos dont routinely calibrate their pumps,

I dont think Tesco are permitted to calibrate their own pumps, it is routinely carried out by an external independant quantity surveying contractor such as Moore Barret and Redwood, Kalebret etc. Very occasionally you see the pump calibration being performed via a calibrated tank either inside a van or on a trailer unit. Close inspection of the pump will show a calibration sticker with the date the last calibration was performed. (I beleive they must be calirated every 6 months - but things may have changed in the last 15 years since I was involved in the industry)

I have managed to put 35L into my 33L tank :beerjug: You can't trust the OBC to be accurate over what's left in the tank. Just get a rough idea over time what mileage you get ( I use 10 miles per litre) and use the trip to tell you when you need fuel. Or take a 2L reserve can on the back of your panniers just in case.
