Considering I could buy a 11 year old BMW 3 series for £1500 yet a GS of the same vintage would cost me over £3000 !

I sold my 1997 R1100GS some years back for £2000 which I thought was a reasonabile price for a bike of its age and condition, yet I'd be hard pushed to find one today for the same money.

I consider on occasion of sellling my more powerful, more economical, comfier, smoother Japanese bike and getting an inferior 1150GS but I would need to add at least a grand to the money I'd get for my bike to by a GS of the same age.

The GS is one of the few bikes I've owned that I've ever considered buying another, but the asking prices are too high for the age and mileage.

I'm sure it's a great bike, but anyone that pays that for a 10 year old GS must have a screw loose.

I Think the prices are based on what it would cost you to get the newer 1200 generation , which dont seem to have dropped much below £4500 , so at £3000 ish the older 1150 looks about the right price

Some too high ... some about right ... few sold "cheap" ... and if they are it's probably for good reason.


Someone (oxo1066) has just listed an 1100GS on ebay .... 1996 , 72K miles (poor photos so can't tell condition) ... but his starting price .... £2499 !!.
Prediction : Zero bids ... come on ... get a grip , by all means put a reserve on it somewhere near to that , but who in their right mind is going to jump in "blind" and bid at that money ?? (I will watch with interest)
I've had a 1998 one for sale on here (not pushed it recently) ... 2 years younger , less miles ++ , and less money ... not even a sniff ... hmm...............

Can't see it on the website. I suppose if its a low miles in nicey nice order its still almost half of a reasonable spec newbie.

I may be wrong. but I think most motorrad websites are limited to new and 'approved'. This one is on eBay.

Comparing similar age GS1150 and RT1150 - the RT is lower in price yet has more on it.......fashion and desirability play a big part in perceived values. I wonder how much my 2003 1150Adv with 96,000 on it is worth? A lot more to me than the £ notes.

That's what I thought its a lot anyway but even more so without the ally boxes even.

Many factors make the price. Hype. Supply and demand. Cost of newer models.But the first two aren usually good reasons for high prices.

Have you checked the price of a 1989 BMW M3 - e30 chassis ?

Sometimes less is more. I much prefer the GS to the RT.

A whole genre of bikes can't be 'overpriced' or they wouldn't sell. The market dictates the prices

A single bike can be overpriced relative to others on the market though.

Hi

I look at the bike and not the number plate when choosing a bike, the fact that bikes loose value by age means that there are some tremendous buy's to be had.
And this is a personal thing but I prefer the older models i have ridden the 1200 range in all of its incarnations and got back onto my 1997 GS1100 and thought that was different but not better !!. I almost feel that I should be really impressed with the later models and be returning to the dealer desperate to do a deal but this has never happened which has been disappointing because having now payed off the mortgage,kids left home etc I am in a better financial position than ever to go with a whim.
So what I am saying is that bikes are worth what others are prepared to pay, look at what some old British bikes are selling for now, they are not my cup of tea but others are paying top dollar.

Just seen that myself, a grand over priced IMO. Seen a R1100GS on ebay during the summer 60k+ miles had been reprayed seller was asking £4000 !
It never sold and was relisted at £2500.

Given the prices for 1100/1150GS's are over inflated that doesn't mean the sellers getting the asking price. I watched a few GSX1400's on ebay that were also over priced none of them sold.

Depends on what you mean by low mileage but yes I would if this was my preferred ride against the new model that would cost me £14000 then its a no brainier. I would still not loose as much in depreciation by buying the 55 plate R1150GS as opposed to the new model.
In fact this year I added to my stable by buying another R1100 gs that had only covered 9000 miles so I now have 2 one with 70,000 miles and my new to me bike that has now covered 11,000 miles. I also have a ZZR1400 that I bought new in 2007 that has only covered 13,000 miles so you can see by the usage which bike I prefer to ride.
P.S Had my first 1100 for 7 years when purchased had covered 10,000 miles.
