Are you a knobbler..?

2 sets of wheels - one with Michelin Anakees other with TKC 80's - somehow the anakees only get put on when I know I'm going to be doing a long distance run which isn't so often so rest of the time I guess I'm a knobbler .

I used tkc's on my dl and they were buggered in no time. They are not really designed for long term road use and just a waste of money to be honest. Yeah they are pretty much one of the best offroad tyres but i only got 3500 before they were wore down to nothing.

I put some of those new continental trail attacks on my dl and good god they are good. I know that everyone likes different sets of tyres but even though mine if jacked up high etc its easy to get the pegs and panniers scraping on the tarmac. They are completely useless offroad though unless all you ride is gravel paths. They have so far put up with 8000 miles of hard riding and still loads of life left in them. Cheap too at £130 for the pair. Ill be putting a set on the GS soon for road riding.

Another good option is the tourance, not the newer tourance exps which are no better. The old tourance lasts for ages, can do bit of rough stuff and are cheap as chips.

Cheers

Paul

knobbers

Use road tyres meself, but drop Motorhead from this ere forum a line, I know he uses TKCs' all the time on/off road. I've followed him a few times and they certainly don't slow him down on the twisties,

I ran TKC's for most of the miles I did last year and came to this conclusion:
Yes they are OK but they will never give the confidence or grip of a road based tyre in the wet, when your knackered, on an unfamiliar road.
They slide around a bit which is fun at times but day in day out and particularly at 7am after a nightshift it got on my t!ts.
I now have 2 sets of wheels, one for general use, work, going to shops etc (road) and another for play and touring (TKC's).
My route to work involes a couple of roads that see very heavy HGV use and these were the areas where the TKC's seemed most skittish in the wet.
They're not as expensive as road tyres so you whould take that into account when comparing mileage. Why not give a set a go and see what you think?

Thinking about it, if I didn't use the bike for comuting now and then which involves riding when absolutely knackered, I'd probably use them all the time.

good stuff..... i will be riding off road a few times a week, never for very long and on dirt/mud tracks, but i've almost dropped bikes when crossing grass verges in the past and have no faith in road tyres on anything except tarmac.

the rest of my riding will be on the road, although the lanes i have to ride to and from work will be awash with mud and leaves soon, so would knobblies be an advantage there?

I'd rather drop it on the grass with road tyres than drop it on the road in the wet with off road tyres:rob

if your not going to do anything serious i would suggest the tourances.

Cheap, £140 a pair, amazing mileage - 10 / 12 k and great road tyres with a smidgen of off road ability.

I agree, I also tried Anakees but couldn't get on with them.

Yes.
I sometimes put Tourances on in summer but always revert to TKCs come winter as I have to ride a lane every day, and it gets too slippery on Tourances.

Just picked up a pair of TKCs for my 1200GS. I didn't realise they are Q rated (OK to 100mph but no more) Anyone had insurance issues for running an unsuitable tyre on their m/c? I believe tyres for the 1200 should be V rated.

Simple, just don't make a claim when riding at over 100mph.;)

Heidenau K60 all the time on/off road. So far 1/2 worn at 12000km's and good to go the same methinks. Awesome tyre.

I also use Heidenau's all the time, 500mls a month (mostly dual carrigeway) for work so get squared off but don't have any problems on the road and find them pretty good off-road, put a new pair on once a year approx. 10000mls. This winter will be my third set.
