Fanum is picking up my 1200GS on Thursday to whisk it down to Morocco:bounce1

Gave it a full going over at the weekend to check fasteners, filters, fit new fornt brake pads, etc etc and noticed a "misting" of oil around the joint on the lower part of my FD unit, hmmm not good.

Went for ride to check new brake pads and tyre pressures at local garage. There I noticed a sizable pool of oil had gathered on my rim after 10 minutes on the side stand  There ws no sign of drips form under teh FD unit, no sign of oil on the disk, so it looks like it has dribbled down the offside of the wheel itself ( cast not spoked )

I spoke with Coopers Tunbridge Wells, who advised having it looked at. Straight away.

The race is now on. BMUU assist will, allegedly, be picking up from my home at 2p.m. to take the bike to Coopers. I am at work in London.

Coopers have said they will try and get on to it as soon as it gets there :clap

I am hoping it is not so serious that it will have to languish in their workshop. They warned against risking riding it on a low oil level - last person they knew to try it managed 400 miles before the shaft seized. Not something I wish to experience in the woolly backs of Morocco.

I've got the Kalahari sitting here just in case, but I suspect going from your 12GSA onto a puke coloured 1100 with over 100 K Miles on it isn't quite what you'd like to do :)

Good luck!!

(Will need to put new rubber on Kalahari and some other bits and bobs need doing if you do need it- stay in touch ;) )
Bill

Assist people turned up on the promised minute !

It is on its way to Coopers now...

Bill, let's hope the Kalahari isn't needed; although the puke colour does have a certain appeal ...

Nothing like last minute arrangements, eh ?

The seal was a goner, and is now gone. Replaced, that is. Can't ask for better service than that.:clap

If it is back together in time they may even be able get it delivered back to my house today by BMUU Assist/Mondial...:bounce1 Else, I will collect it after work tomorrow night.

Pheeeew!

Bill, can we pad out the helmets with jackets, trouses and boots ?

Yup.....they'll be going in the back of the Landy so they do need to be wrapped well.....if it all gets a bit blowy in the Bay of Biscay the landy rocks'n rolls like a drunk pig :)

Tried to call you this AM to confirm details for tomorrow- will try again in a bit :)

Just for you long range tossers out der....i have a spare 1200 FD...

If this sort of thing happens again bell me and who-ever, can have a lend of it. It would need picking up from North Wales thou.
Lyn.

Just want to say thank you to everyone that has offered a spare FD unit
:thumb2
Looks like it is a common spare part to keep to hand- not sure where to stash it on the bike though :nenau

Oil Seals - expensive disposables

Just had my 04 1200GS in for 30,000 mile service. Dealer told me all three seals were failing and would cost over £700 to replace. Not unusual at that mileage, apparently. Not on any car I've ever owned.

This is the first BMW bike I've owned(15000 miles-had leaks fixed), but I'm on my third BMW car. I'm sure there are leaks somewhere around the car in the gearbox\engine final drive area, but who bothers to look. The GS castings are exposed, and with this website owners are more likely to "check to see" :type.
My question is; have boxer's always had trouble with oil leaks from the Gearbox -engine joint?, or is it just the recent ones with extra balancer shafts with extra seals (and higher production numbers).:mmmm

And is this just a trait applicable to the GS or are all the other 1200 Boxers affected. If they are, is it a case of "Out of Site" (hidden under loads of plastic) "Out of Mind".
