Another in the series of WW1 Battlefield inspired day trips across to France.

This time we turn our attention away from the Ypres Salient to the French part of the Western Front.

Leaving UK on an early ferry and motorway dash towards Arras calling in at Notre Dame de Lorrette and Vimy Ridge before lunch in the city and then a visit to the Wellington Quarry museum and tunnels, before the run home. Total mileage around 140.

We are booked on the Seafrance sailing out at 0830 and back at 2020.

You probably already know there are only so many tours each day and the tour does take some time. May be wise to flirt them an email to book your group in on a slot.
Im there again in May.

Thanks Glyno. I emailed them a week or so ago and have yet to get a reply. I'll have another go or get my wife who speaks pretty good business French to call them!

Would love to visit this area again, but sadly not this time. I visited with a large family group in April 2007 and we were lucky to have Simon Godly (associated with the webmatters site mentioned above AFAIK) as our guide for the few days, he was excellent.

We were particularly interested to visit Gavrelle near Arras where my grandfather Paddy Horkan, serving with the Worcestershire Regt was wounded (once of three occasions) in the Battle of Arleux. He was later awarded the Military Medal, for gallantry shown on the day (29th April 1917).

The whole area is really amazing with so much to see and Arras is a great town and ideal base.

Our relatives that died on the Western Front fought mostly with Irish regiments. We've done a few trips across to Ypres and my wife and I have done trips to visit our family war graves around Lille/Armentieres.

Always emotional.
