Arsey in the Alps ?

Day 3

Day 3 dawned bright and sunny.

Minutes after leaving Valloire we encountered this stunning vista :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-xadmnb6gx8m1hp368cejfii1cm.jpg" alt="DSC01125"/>

What a bloody great way to quickly get rid of a hangover :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-e63j2x7un8nuic6cp7pd4neujs.jpg" alt="DSC01135"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-fs8g1e1j6j8k44ymtef14f3cp3.jpg" alt="DSC01136"/>

Some of the views really did take the breath away :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-xsphii8f9bjbe99u2jw4bk1kfp.jpg" alt="DSC01157"/>

Bed time,as it's 2240 here in Chicago and 0440 in UK.

To be continued tomorrow

Just a thought - and forgive my newness and lack of previous contribution - but did you camp or B&B it all the way round?

Would you happen to have any info on sites/locations??

Planning a trip there next year, so any info would be much appreciated if you could.

JB

Awesome pics. I did a very similar ride a couple of months ago and recognise a few of the locations.

I've recently had a go at creating my own website to show the adventures I have been on. I have the ride I did in the Alps on under France 08. Have a look and see what you think.

We hotelled it all the way-I'm not really into the canvas thing,especially 5000ft up when the temperature was way down in single figures at night.

We booked the first night in Morzine at the hotel La Bergerie shown above and then stayed in the Hotel de Poste in Valloire also shown above.

From Valloire onwards all rooms were €45-55 which seemed pretty good,though restaurant prices were a bit higher than in non-mountain locations.

Day 3-continued

So,the stunning views continued as we covered a total of about 180 miles again today :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-kxeq5cwpfuiuiwj5fwxhkfnr2t.jpg" alt="DSC01167"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-xbh4w2gdw5tx6h5bxwwt82h35m.jpg" alt="DSC01177"/>

It was about not that my 100% faithful bike,having had it's second birthday last week,decided to start slipping the clutch.

It was ok on a very gentle throttle,so would actually manage the 2nd/3rd gear hairpins fine but on any straight,would slip as soon as you opened it up above 3000 rpm.

Thoughts ran through my head such as :

bloody typical
good job I took out extended warranty last week
might think about selling it if it is going to start to let me down

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-c328cpu4bxqscfkbhqeisxfxak.jpg" alt="DSC01182"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-n7x9qdgqmdwjjc51y5ag1w99pb.jpg" alt="DSC01188"/>

We eventually got to the ski resort of Valberg,which seemed like beer o'clock,so we pitched up at this hotel and found a couple of room and a garage again for the bikes :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-pr6guj7pcfsnydgum52ydpp2fe.jpg" alt="P9150015"/>

The place was like a ghost town,being out of season :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-mpqq18cgadx127wytn68t1sq49.jpg" alt="P9150019"/>

We were only about 60 miles from Nice,following the route,so tomorrow would see us get to Menton and onwards to begin the Route Napoleon,hopefully getting my bike looked at first.

I`ve just had a read of your site Dean, I enjoyed your ride reports very much :thumb2 :beerjug:

Day 4

Another beautiful day and off we went.

Bugger,I had forgotten my fcuking clutch was playing up.

Sod you bike-gone from the best bike ever to a liability in one easy move !

Anyway,the secenery was as stunning as ever,such as the medieval town of Roubion clinging to the hillside :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-nykge8jb4g3dw8xarhaj7369sp.jpg" alt="DSC01189"/>

and the bends just kept on coming :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-gnnta6bkrjkhdqqskgca72tx4e.jpg" alt="DSC01191"/>

and the views changed on every corner :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-1qndksdbyqhn9mky531gu7i4pi.jpg" alt="DSC01203"/>

quite literally

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-ry132ma64qat5s75kd11hw74dt.jpg" alt="DSC01206"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-kma3apermkt3e6mh1i7n4q8whr.jpg" alt="DSC01209"/>

but finally,after 440 miles of the most sinuous beautiful roads ever,we arrived at the end in Menton :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-je8ei4qt5f71peshpg83cbaar.jpg" alt="DSC01218"/>

Nerdvana T Shirts on to celebrate (long story-don't ask :augie)

So that was it,the Routes Des Grandes Alpes done.

:tears

But still the Route Napoleon/Verdun Gorge and possibly Millau/Tarn Gorge to go !!

jackson.gif

If I could fix my bloody bike !!!!

:mcgun

So,Richard ,having the wonderful BM sat nav proceeded to take me to the BMW Motorrad in Nice,who wasn't there any more.

Bollards !!!

A nice gendarmerie then told us about a BM specialist and gave us the address,and off we went :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-ktpbdsrp289x4xi5p57f3j5u31.jpg" alt="P9160022"/>

Pitched up and told him in my best French that the clutch was fcuked,and he said it was doubtful he could do anything but would take a look.

Out he came and said

I can fix your bike for you

With that,he took hold of the left handguard,rotated it up about an inch and announced

your bike,now she is fixed

How we bloody laughed !!!!

For 150 miles plus I had nursed the fcuking thing,cursing it for playing up on this fab trip,and all along it was only the bloody handguard fouling the clutch lever and pinching it in about half an inch.

What a twat,as explained in another thread.

The lever had always been near to touching the handguard,but I hadn't realised the guard could move,even though the bolts were secure.

Apologies to bike made (though handguard design is shite) and off we went for a celebratory beer before heading off to Cannes for an ice cream and oggle :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-rs59xmyg5yaxc3qs85nqyj55m8.jpg" alt="DSC01221"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-x44migdpmxmqanhcbntiiqerex.jpg" alt="DSC01223"/>

And then time to head up to Grasse for the start of the Route Napoleon and find a hotel.

We were going to stay on the coast but it was so noisy and tacky after the serenity of the mountains that we decided to head onwards and upwards :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-a2md6etapjnuuqhau17n42hhf.jpg" alt="DSC01234"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-xp9xc5m9xfs5x9xtr5e2y2m15f.jpg" alt="DSC01237"/>

We arrive at Castellane and find the last rooms at the Hotel du Levant :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-ni15tb44q8m7gj1sj2e5f4aq14.jpg" alt="DSC01246"/>

The view out of my window ain't bad !! :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-q1ap49jfinb1sj9b85qxjafhsb.jpg" alt="DSC01240"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-kbx2yniwpqe778jdyuye9dssem.jpg" alt="DSC01258"/>

Over dinner,we ring Bob (Shenzi) over in Millau.

The forecast in that part is not brilliant for next few days whereas northbound is still beautiful.

The first 30 miles of the Route Napoloen have been such a blast that we decide to bin the 200 mile across from here to Millau and we'll leave the bridge and tarn Gorge for another year,and instead,ride the Route Napoleon in it's entirety up all the way to Grenoble.

But first,the Gorge du Verdon in the morning.

Day 5

The sun is shining and the Gorge du Verdun beckons.

The pictures don't need any explanation.

The views were mindblowing :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-bwswun6i9bkc43nawyqgbkce15.jpg" alt="DSC01269"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-g826k2di2kd3d4w1m4mjj624q4.jpg" alt="DSC01272"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-85t88xgk4hkau4tstxcfsc1df9.jpg" alt="DSC01286"/>

Time for a cuppa :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-e7fu2rdg2yn7ruraduf1qty17t.jpg" alt="DSC01294"/>

but don't sit on that low wall on the right and lookd down if you suffer from vertigo :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-1c717rm23bs7qqwwyyc7m8utjq.jpg" alt="DSC01291"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-d6ygw71gmuakix6qtkjksf6r8y.jpg" alt="DSC01300"/>

After the Gorge,it was back on to the Route Napoleon.

I could not believe this road.It was so good that we didn't stop to take any pics and break the flow.I really must go back on my Ducati.

When we got to Dignes we decided to branch off on the D900 which looked interesting before rejoining the RN at Gap.

I'm so glad we did as we came across another gorge and some of the tightest back roads I've ever seen.

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-nwfgjhjj9g77pmdjhbhi4xw5bd.jpg" alt="DSC01379"/>

It's impossible to explain in just pics how stunning this area was.

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-gbw3yf7s4gfi33ed5xr2rpucha.jpg" alt="DSC01385"/>

And that was the Route Napoleon done.

We got to Grenoble and hit McDonalds to nick the free wifi and get online with the iphone to book a hotel in Lyon.

But every bloody hotel was full due to a footy match, so I persuaded Richard to head up to Annecy,as I had heard it was very beautiful and it would be another box ticked.

So glad we did,as it was stunning :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-eja3iufpjr52wdj3iw27ajiaby.jpg" alt="DSC01388"/>

Time for beer etc !!

Day 6

And heading home !!

Quick wander round Annecy and brekky by the river :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-nrqqdwfns5xd7wud54q29gs6be.jpg" alt="DSC01399"/>

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-xb53c8m5i4h2qcscf8yeepeiay.jpg" alt="DSC01450"/>

Lazy bastard !!!! :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-q2upkue9bbhbq77fjih7kn73pq.jpg" alt="DSC01455"/>

And time to set off.

We decided to blast up to Le Mans,a mere 470 miles,before heading our separate ways the following morning.

A number of hours later we pitch up and park :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-c2361qkfg1c2jbqdr9jyexuhfj.jpg" alt="DSC01461"/>

Day 7

That's it.

Richard buggers off on a 300 mile run to see if the tunnel is still alight and i head off the back way to St Malo to catch my ferry.

But first some essential shopping :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-p4m4d74qfi8hbh1ns1n4rhunc8.jpg" alt="DSC01463"/>

But how to pack 18 litres of wine on an already full bike ?

Sorted !! :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-pcs69nnp4c96ra14eai872wcqw.jpg" alt="DSC01464"/>

Time for a potter around the beautiful Brittany coast before heading to the ferry :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-q2pc3p8j8e9tq4ep8rt1kqb5bf.jpg" alt="DSC01470"/>

The sun sets on the best trip I've ever had on 2 wheels :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-re1jptcxin9xahc1eyy6fr5a5a.jpg" alt="DSC01478"/>

2100 miles in a week.

Both bikes faultless,if you discount the clutch/handguard mishap.

The bikes was stunning in every other sense and runs better now with 7500 miles on it than ever.

The way it coped with every type of road from stupidly tight hairpins to fast sweepers was fantastic.

Poor thing is knackered :

<img src="http://img.skitch.com/20080922-p62nxbi44ubxjskrurrw3ichbp.jpg" alt="DSC01495"/>

Already thinking about next year.

Italian lakes,Stelvio etc or possibly down to Millau/Tarn Gorge,over the Pyrenees and onwards to Picos before boat back via Santander ?

Bring it on !!
