Good morning folks,

I'm at a bit of a dead end here, so looking for some advice from y'all.

I am the owner of a 2018 R1250GS. I have recently purchased some upper crash bars, that mount under the beak. I have the OEM Auxiliary Lights fitted, but I am in the process of relocating to the upper crash bars... photo for reference.

unfortunately the GS auxiliary light... cables (?)... for want of a better word are not long enough to reach the right hand side of the bike. I've spoken to my local BMW dealer and as it sits outside of the realms of standard GS/GSA they were of little assistance. My question is... how difficult would it be to splice this cable, only to extend to reach the other side of the bike to mount on the crash bars (second photo)

Note, I am not looking to splice into the cable to add more lights, all I want to do is extend the cable in length. Is there anywhere I can find the specs of the cables or can I just run any cable to extend?

My mechanical knowledge is fairly sound, but anything to do with electronics puts the fear of god into me so I tend to steer clear, however this time I'm feeling brave!

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

Some solderseals ,a bit of shrink to wrap them in from the weather and a piece of flat two core cable ( or three core depending on the type of light) would do the job.

 
I would say grab some cable and splice in the extra lenght you need

The dealer should be able to do that (15 mins min 60 mins max )

but if you dont feel comfortable doing it, andy half decent autosparks will do it for you

Thanks matey, I might just have to give it a go myself. Especially seeing those solderseals in action! I don’t suppose you could recommend any decent wiring to use to splice? I’m a bit of a novice if I’m honest. Run of the mill Halfords 17amp cable? https://www.halfords.com/tools/fuse...alfords-17-amp-cable-black-hef732-121251.html

Or something more specialised?
 
PM me you address and I will sort you out a piece of cable and some solder seals on the morning
 
5amp or 7amp cable i would have thought be suitable

But Andi has stepped up to assist :)

Speaking to the parts guy from BMW, the GSA has sockets on either side. I traced the wires back to the left hand side of the bike where the wires tie into the loom and it’s just ran from the handle bar into the wiring loom then splits. It would be much easier if there was a socket either side that’s for sure!
 
Ive posted you a short length of flat two core cable, half a dozen solderseals and some shrinkwrap, don't forget to put the shrink onto the cable [but out of the way] before you heat the solderseals.A lighter will do if you have nothing else but dont hold the flame too close or you will burn the insulation.
Once the solderseals cool pull the heat shrink down over them [ overlapping the cable either end] then heat to shrink.
 
Good for you!,i always find those solder seals tricky buggers to get the right heat and as you say easy to melt the plastic.

Ah I see what you mean. Those sockets tie straight into the auxiliary lights. There isn’t a cable that connects to the the sockets and then the auxiliary lights.
