OK, I'm heading out to Istanbul on the 30th July, so thought I'd service the bike this weekend. Only I hit a few "snags" and now need some help!

Firstly, the oil filter seems to be stuck. It was replaced 6000 miles/8 months
ago, by a bike shop in Berkhamsted so not sure what make etc. I can't get the bugger out, so landed up changing just the oil instead. It would be nice to replace it with a new filter, but I could probably live without it for now.

Secondly, I have play in the back wheel. I think this is the rear thrust bearing, but wouldn't like to bet my house on it. I REALLY need to get this sorted before I go.

Thirdly, I have a bit of an oil leak. Not sure where from, and it can't be major as I'm not losing that much oil, but it is making a mess of the engine casing. I'll spend some time tomorrow cleaning it up properly to see if I can find out more. Again, it would be nice to get this sorted before I go if poss.

Now my real problem is that I'm working Thurs night/Fri/Sat and Sun, so really only have 3 and a half days to get this sorted, and I don't feel confident enough to do it all myself in the timescale and without jeopardising the holiday. I also don't want to waste Monday phoning around dealers/shops etc. trying to find someone who can fix it.

So would anyone here within an hours ride of Chesham be able to spend some time with my 1150GSA to get her top notch before my trip?

Much appreciated

L

Why not send a PM to Steptoe (Kingston i believe).
The tight oil filter and slight oil leak you can put up with (unless its leaking onto the tyre).
The rear wheel play is more serious. It may be the paralever bearings need adjusting (not too dificult) or the big bearing maybe on its way out (can be tricky at home and a showstopper while on the road).
Do a search on how to check which bearing is failing and go from there.
Good luck.

Hi L,

I'm in Amersham.... prob can't do much about the play in the rear wheel but could have a go at the filter and help find the oil leak!

ps... Steptoe would be able to sort you out but depends how busy he is. Nothing like leaving it to the last minute eh:D

I had a filter that was stuck. The filter wrench wouldn't grip. A Steptoe tip on another thread was to place wet n dry around the inside of the wrench as you place it over the filter. I did this and it came off first turn. The oil leak, if not the head gasket, may well be the oil pressure gadget on the lower left of the crank case. It's very easy to replace.

If your at vines at 8.00am monday morning come see me and we will get on a ramp for inspection and costs we will do it there and then if you agree to the costs and you can borrow my demo for the day if you need to go home just fetch your D/L :)

thanks darren...

... depends on what your demo bike is :) :beerjug:

and of course your hourly rates... (what's the going rate for a BMW dealer nowadays?) :nenau

Oil filter

if basdly stuck, drill two small holes diametricaly opposed in the filter wrench
at the edge. Put the spanner on the filter and screw two self tapping srews
into the filter through the holes. You can then pull as hard as you like and it will come off, puitting it back only do it up HAND tight.
