Anyone know if i can use ATF in front forks on a 2014 GSA? Im in Niger and have new seals , but only oil available is ATF

if yes, what viscosity is best.
appreciate any feedback

cheers

If I had nothing apart from ATF and would be stranded otherwise, I'd use it.

I'd use anything to get me out of trouble

hi, thanks and agreed, but its 42C here at present and wary of how that may affect the forks when the oil is likely heating up more under stress . want to make sure im putting in the right (or at least best) weight
i do go off road quite a bit, so suspension does get some pounding (just upgraded dead original shocks to 132/142 TFX versions. as son as i get forks done, will be testing them.

I’d use whatever is available. The shock does most of the work anyway. JJH

Yes that would work fine. ATF viscosity is usually between 7.5w and 10w which is pretty much the same as the fork oil you would normally use eg 10w

Honda used it recommend ATF in Showa forks years back :thumb

Enjoy the rest of you trip :thumb

When i had to replace my forks, if my memory serves me correctly, the fork legs do not perform any damping duties at all. The bottom of the fork leg is open, there is a small hole about half way up the tube, but i thought that was an air bleed hole.
So as a result, i think the only thing the oil does is lube the bushes in the outer leg, so any oil would probably do.

At one time ATF was the recommended fork oil to use by many bike makers, as already mention it’s generally a 7.5 w. By all means use it, would be curious if you can notice any difference so please report back on how you get on. Have a good trip!
