AUGUST - French Gastro Tour

Given that we will be sharing a room with one or all of our fine travelling companions that is the Gastrobash would it be advisable to take the following: earplugs, gas mask/face mask, surgical gloves, oxygen, Wellington boots and tweezers/cork. :eek

Or..... none of the above........... just earplugs :sleep

An inside cabin, with bunk beds... and no window to open
How much for your sleeper seat? :D

Ahem

Yer bike is on carpets????

Very neatly packed I must say!

The Sleeper priceless..........:aidan

You might want to think about upgrading for the sake of your senses!

See yer all tomorrow evening :JB

Hell ballistic, is that a bazooka you've got sticking out the back of your bike or are you just pleased to see us. :augie And if its hot now, it is just going to get warmer mid-week so I have thought of a cunning plan to stay cool:

Well life's a bitch sometimes or else how do you explain a tooth abcess 24 hours into this much anticipated trip. :( To cut a not very long story short, ballistic, gr8roberto, fishbird, weavo and yours truly met up as arranged last Monday evening at the Portsmouth ferry terminal pub to down a few jars and generally put the world to rights before embarking.

All went swimmingly until the first great gastro meal on Tuesday evening at a splendid retreat to the south of Orleans when the 'agony' hit home and I realised that the slight toothache I had been experiencing had turned into a full-blown, gut wrenchingly painful and unendingly awful abcess.

Well you can't ride in 34C heat over the distances we had planned with that sort of pain so I had to bail out of the trip the next morning when matters were no better. A very tedious 350km later and I managed to catch the FastCat from Cherbourg back to Porsmouth with my sorry tail well between my legs.

Heigh-ho, shit happens.

Anyhow, the others will be back by Sunday and I look forward to the cracking ride report and photos which will surely follow.

Had a PM from ballistic yesterday: His new phone can receive incoming texts and calls, but he can't reply or make o/g calls....

:blast

Someone has a "notebook" though, which seems to be a good thing...

He said they were just off to McDonalds after a 80c litre carton of rouge each.....not sure what that means My tastes are simple...

:augie

Next one?

Brittany?

:drool

Er, well its just a teaser but after my 6 hour dash back across country to catch the ferry, I have come to this conclusion.

The real fun to be had on these jaunts over a shortish period like 5 days is not in riding for hours on end on bloody motorways and highly regulated 90kph Route Nationales to get to the middle of France. Much more fun are easily managed, well selected hour long blats down great B and C class roads. Lots of bends and open vistas with plenty of stopovers for local coffee and croissants etc.

Landing from Portsmouth in Caen or Cherbourg opens up a wonderful choice over the Brittany peninsular with great places to stay and eat local produce, fish and crustacea and all easily accessible.

So the seeds of a late September GastroBash II in Brittany are being sown. :augie

Well that I should be able to make, as long as it doesn't clash with Invictamoto's wipers-2 day-trip on 20th Sept.

My problem (well one of them) is that I am in Broadstairs, Kent, so my crossing options are only Dover or Folkestone.

Actually, apart from a few (well quite a few really:eek:) extra miles, that shouldn't be a problem as the morning ferries from Porstmouth to Caen get in about lunchtime. This should give plenty of time for you to blat across the Channel first thing and then ride down the coast to meet us as we arrive. :comfort

Just had a call from ballistic - They're just getting into port and about to get off the ferry.....

I'm assuming there'll be a day by day, course by course, bottle by bottle account of this trip..?

:drool

Quite. I was nothing short of speechless at the subtle Normandy nuances of 'Le Big Mac' when compared to its equivalent from our shores :augie

All I am prepared to say is that we ate and drank nothing but the finest French cuisine :augie

I call "Photoshop", the reasons being:

a) ballistic in a McDonald's.

b) ballistic appears to have a cola type beverage in front of him.

c) a and b and ballistic smiling.
