I have made this a sticky, not least as knutk (a Norwegian and resident in Norway) has given what looks to be the definitive answer.

I used ferry pay last year on a bike trip. However it’s not just for bikes. It was very easy to set up and worked flawlessly throughout our trip. Ride on, scan of the number plates and that’s it. A few days later an email to let me know I had paid. I would certainly use it again.

Thanks for that Glen,
I am going too be using roads and ferrys so wondering initially for the road part...

I think you will have to pay tolls on some roads. The tolls are not applicable to bikes so can’t really help you with that. It’s a fantastic country to visit.

We did this.
As the numbered road with cameras lead or link with the ports then I assume it just works? (viz. the ferries are actually part of the road system, rather than being an optional route)

I got the Flytt pass recently. I'm shite on tech stuff and I managed to register and the tag arrived (here in France) a few days later.

For non-domestic vehicles, there are two type of payments.

Ferry crossings and Tollroads.

For ferry: Ferrypay
Tollrads: Epass24

Both systems require a registration online. But there is no additional cost beyond the actual Ferry ticket/Toll passage.
Vehicles are registered with cameras, and requires no further action from driver (except for paying the bills :ROFLMAO: )

There are several other systems available, but the ones above covers all public roads/ferries and is all you need, with no additional fees nor any obligations.

If you happen to enter a remote, privately maintained road, there will be signs saying so, and explains how to pay (usually some kind of reference to a webpage). This would typically be some remote mountain roads etc..

Also: MC pays on ferries, using Ferrypay.

MC do NOT pay on public toolroads, so the Epass24 system is for non MC vehicles only. Same goes for Speed cameras. MC will not be fined if being busted in a speedcamera.
Norwegian legislation demands that the fine is paid by the driver, not the owner of the vehicle. And the drivers face needs to be positivly identified..

Radar contoll performed by the police or under-cover cars is a different story, and the rates are HIGH...

I've now linked my Flyt tag with an autopass account which is neither of the above 2, ferrypay or epass24.

Yes, that will work.

But then you will need a transponder attached to your vehicle, (usually in the windscreen hidden behind the rear view mirror) and there are monthly fees.

The above mention solutions are both free, without any monthly fee and does not require anything installed in your vehicle... post #7

Mildly edited to emphasise knutk’s advice.

Me and my better half drove up to the Artic Circle (1 month, 6000 mile round trip) the summer before last (June) in our Citroen C3 Picasso.
We didn't bother to register for tolls as I understand the Norwegian government register your plate on their system and pass any tolls to an agency in the UK to collect road and ferry tolls.
We haven't received the bill yet but there is still time I guess, even though it is getting on for two years ago.
Tourism has changed the far north a lot and the wildlife is retreating but it's still incredible beautiful.
If you get the chance go out on the Whale watching trip from Andenes, the Sperm Whales have learnt to take the Halibut off the longlines as they are pulled up.

I also looked at epass24. I hope they sorted you out. Like you, I read their site and it does say to look at the central provider for each country. I think epass is just a preferred collection agent.
I found this page that relates to the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (NPRA). I think they then have contracted out different roads/regions to private contractors to build/manage the infrastructure and then you can sign up with one of the Autopass toll operators (if you use them regularly) or epass24 as an more casual alternative but does not offer any discounts.

For example one toll supplier on their website https://flytpass.no/en/autopass-agreement/how-to-register-foreign-vehicles

Offer 20% discount, takes 5 days to set up, 3-4 weeks to get the tag BUT says it will register your tolls without the tag.

Also found this site where you can gauge your toll bill. Obviously without exact road usage its a guide but still better than nothing

So starting in Kolding, Denmark to Bergen to Lofoten (using ferries) It says tolls will be around the £80 mark with discounts.
It doesn't include ferries from Hirtshals to Larvik and Bodo to Lofoten.

Time of day etc and vehicle fuel type effects how much discount you get.

We are just back from a a Norway trip. Our autopass worked well with 50% off the ferries we had to pay for, many were free Including the alternate to the Bodo - Lofoten ferry, the Skutvik (mainland) to Svolvaer (Lofoten) ferry. (We preferred the quieter Senja to Lofoten)

Nice, glad it all went well.
Any tips now you are an expert?

We just happened to drive thru two areas that had toll roads in towns on Sundays…so no toll payable but fairly sure that the Autopass would have had it covered. We got an email and attached pdf receipt the day after we used anything that required payment. It was all seemless (we were in a camper)
We didnt use cash at all in Norway (or Finland for that matter) everything just worked and it was an absolute joy to spend time there.

Update/refresh of information, July 2025:

If you just want the conclusion, skip to the last paragraph...

A system that started out quite simple has slowly evolved into what may appear as a confusing mess.

A bit of history, a simplified version:

Autopass started out as an automatic pay-system for Tollroads in the Oslo -region 35 years ago.. It started out as one company charging toll for 1 road...

Slowly, more 'crossings' where added to the list, and within a few years Autopass would be used nationwide.
Motorcycles have not been charged for public tollroads. Thus, Autopass-system was/is a car/truck system.

After a few years, it was decided to include the Ferries. But the Ferries wanted to continue charging MC as well.

As Autopass rely on a transponder-solution, and Autopass did not care about MC (Remember, it was a Tollroad system) someone eventually came up with the idea of Ferrypay. This is a system that rely on cameras, with no need for a transponder mounted in the vehicle.

As the user base grew, the Government decided to split the Autopass system into a unit that runs the technical part and seperate operateors for collecting payments.

Thus, as of time of writing, Autopass is now a description of the technology, and we as users may subscribe to one of several operators. And the operators role is to collect money.

But then, there are MC riders in here that also ride on vehicles with more than two wheels. And wanting to use the Autopass system, you will have to choose between one of several collecting-operators.

They all provide shiny websites, but at the end of the day, you end up pay pretty much the same price, regardless of the operator.
One of them stands out as there is only one operator (at least, not at the time of writing) that does not charge a monthly fee.
The monthly fee from the other operators are not very high, but for what it's worth, the SkyttelPass.no company does not charge a monthly fee.
Choosing a prepaid solution will offer discounts for fares. As the fares rise if the vehicle is longer than 6m, it ought to be considered if driving campervans (or any other vehicle longer than 6m)

----------------

So,,, to sum it up, valiid July 2025: (in my opinion)

  1. Riding MC: Go for Ferrypay.no. No need for anything else, as you don't get charged for public tollroads anyway.
  2. Driving 4 wheels: Subscribe to Skyttelpass.no, They cover Tollroads and ferries, and is currently the only operator not charging a monthly fee.
  3. If your 'ride' is longer than 6 meter, choosing the prepaid subscription will save you money, worth considering.

=======

Mildly edited, to emphasise the July 2025 date and a tiny tidy-up.
