I have checked through many of the previous postings on Autocom installation but most of them appear to relate the positioning of the control unit itself and not the actual wiring which is where I am stuck.

I wondered if anyone may be able to provide me with a blow by blow description of how to wire the thing into the bike (1150gs ABS) as I have read the Autocom instructions and looked at the bundle of wires under the seat /tank and am none the wiser.

I am particularly stuck as to

1) Which wires on the bike do I connect the red and black cables of the Autocom unit.

2) At which point on the bike that I should make these connections

3) How I should make these connections with minimal disruption to the existing cabling.

The fact that I am posting a question requiring such a simplistic explanation as to how to wire the unit in probably suggests I should take it down to Bridge Motorcycle or the like and get them to do it but I'm sure I'm not the only electrics idiot out there..........

Cheers

re wiring

red lead to a live suppy (ign fed live is best) the black lead to earth..
all connections can be made in the fusebox.
and when you wire it in solder the wires as scotchlocks are crap...
and dont forget to use a fused link on the live wire..

hope it helps :beerjug: :D ;)

Do you want to meet up and see how mine is fitted?

PM or e-mail me.

Autocom

I have wired the unit into 1100LTs 1100RTs and now into my current GS
I moved the diagnostic plug which sits on top of the air filter slightly and then velcro-ed the autocom unit to sit on the top near the back (check seat does not rub on it). I have always taken the live feed from the live side of the rear light. This gives a lights on check as the autocom will not work if the lights are off.
Hope this helps.

Fused Link ??????????

I did say treat me as an idiot???????

Take it to the shop !
Christmas is coming soon. The kids need a dad... any dad, not a GS+rider bonfire.

I have also wired in to the back light then if my girlfriend moans about my speed i turn off the lights no more moaning

Back light is good for me too - easy to get to and it means that when you switch the bike off with the ignition key the Autocom switches off too, so no drain on your battery.

Very easy to do - save yourself £40 fitting!

I'm with Den on this.

With the very basic nature of your questions, you'll probably end up with a broken bike, a broken Autocom and your garage on fire.

Even if you get it working, your skills and experience are such that it'll not work for long!

Have you ever used a soldering iron? Do you know what fuse rating to use? Do you understand the risk of using the tail-lamp wire as your power supply?

Take it to the shop!

FWIW BMW Do Not recommend using the rear brake live as a switched earth on bikes fitted with Evo ABS:)

using the tail light;

ABS-
i had that problem when i tried to set up a Trainer to Trainee unit on my (long gone) K75s.
the problem was actually the fecked battery - but adding another feed off the tail light only confused the issue:rolleyes:
as an electrical moron myself;) i'd look elsewhere for a feed.

I fitted mine last week to an 1100GS, and had the same issue as you. I fitted it in the tool tray (I have a handle bar bag for the tools anyway, as the alarm occupies the tray as well), I took the earth of the Rear light earth, and the live feed from the Foot brake switch on the right and side of the bike. So this only comes on when the ignition comes on. I am thinking of fitting a small on off switch to the unit as well, as I only use it when my daughters on the back, so might as well switch it off when not using it.

Hope that helps.
