Q. Can either of the above situated on the near side below the rider's seat be used to trickle charge the battery?

If you have a Canbus compatible system, such as the latest Optimate, or the BMW charger - yes.
An alternative is to get a new socket installed on the off-side (under passenger grab handle) that is wired directly to the battery terminals, preferably via a fuse, & then you can use the older models of Optimate.

I heard you should only use the ?? one!! Not being sure I thought I'd ask you knowledgable guys first

AS long as it's not an ex Police bike, the sockets do the same job.
