Does anybody know if the Aux socket and the sat nav connector are linked .I did have my sat nav powered from the Aux socket just below the seat but some times it would shut off and come back on shut off then back on then other times no problems .Its only a sat nav so no great load any way I have brought the connector for the lead up by the head stock turned on the bike all great sat nav powers up turns off 30 seconds after the bike turns off today just running the bike and after about 20 seconds of running the sat nat turns off . back to the aux socket it is a bit green inside I have spray some acf50 up there could it be the socket shorting the circuit .If not I will put a relay from the battery and advise why to take a switch wire form thanks

You can pick a 12v+ trigger from the green wire to the diagnostic socket..

Instant on/off with the ignition..

I also have a satnav powered from the aux socket wire. I used that power source rather than the front socket because of the length of the cabling used with the zumo 590. The unit does power down as expected. If you put a meter across either socket connections I find that when the canbus powers down there appears to be a .5v or so residual voltage registering. I believe that if you have a weak battery and leave the satnav in the cradle over a few days with out running the engine, it may flatten the battery.

Hi thanks
But any ideas why both sockets are powering down could it be the corrosion on the plug on the socket below the seat

I would be investigating the sat nav end of things. Failing in the same or similar way at two different power points suggests to me that your problem isn't the bike.

Try connected direct to the battery (pull the in line fuse when you want it off). If you still have problems it's the sat nav/cradle/fly leads. If all is good then it's something weird with the bike.

Bit of a hijak, but any idea why my optimate bmw plug doesnt work in the Aux socket on my 12 when its worked just fine for years on previous 11's, 1150's and my 850?

Your other bikes were simple battery, wires and switches. The 1200 are a bit more complicated with ECU's and can bus controllers. The bike shuts down the power sockets unless you have a canbus compliant charger to keep the socket live.

just a quick overview I had a used the aux socket under the seat to run a cigarette type socket with a garmin charger in it ,Most of the time it worked fine on with the bike and off. every now and again it would turn on the turn off then power up again .over the winter i brought the connector for the plug by the headstock which i have wired in a voltage reducer 12v to 5 usb to power the sat nav .with the bike turned on but not running it seemed ok power up and turns off after about 20 seconds switching off . due to work at the moment i have not been out on it yet but switch on and started the engine sat nav powers up but about 10 seconds later it said power loss .I have try this a couple of times and it has done the same .this is what make me think the feed for the aux socket and sat nav connector are linked within the bikes system and maybe the back off the aux socket with has some green corrosion is tripping the circuit ,It can not be the sat nav as this has been used in a car this weekend and it was fine plus i am sure it would not draw more than 1amp at the most so it would not overload the circuit .I known the easy route would be a relay and switch with the green wire from the diagnostic socket but i would like to understand the problem
thanks

I run my Garmin Montana in a Garmin Cradle powered from the Socket under the headstock. Powers up instantly with the ignition and stays on for around 2 minutes after the ignition goes off. I think the aux socket does the same (maybe for less than 2 minutes though, I have never used it as it is in a stupid location). The only time my garmin shows power loss is sometimes on starting the engine when the voltage drop must be enough for the can bus to drop power to the sat nav circuit. Otherwise all fine except when the internals of my Garmin went iffy and then I had symptoms somewhat similar to your description but mine was associated with vibration, knocks and bumps in the road.

If it was OK in the car (how is it powered in the car?) then it has to be something that's not taken from car to bike, or as you surmise the bike itself. I couldn't say if the sat nav plug and the accessory socket are linked electrically nor whether a problem with the accessory socket would show up via the sat nav plug but it seem unlikely. To clear your mind why not degunge the accessory socket - WD40, a rag, and something pointy but not too sharp. If no joy I would trace and check the wires and every connector between "power in" on the Sat Nav and the Sat Nav connector under the headstock, including the security of the USB connector.

Good luck

I got caught in a thunderstorm in the Pyrenees two years ago and forgot to put the cover on the Garmin cradle. Played up for days despite the heat. Kept 'losing' the sat nav.
