Can anyone tell me what the law is regarding auxiliary lights and M.O.T testing, as my M.O.T tester is unsure. Many Thanks

Mine are wired so that they will only come on if the sidelight circuit is positive (i.e you have tail and sidelight on) and with an on/off switch.

Passed MOT twice, so far.

If I remember the reg's for aux lights are vague on 'bikes - Only that they shouldn't dazzle if used with or instead of dip beam........

:comfort

Fog lights with lo beam.

Spot lights with hi beam (illuminated independent switch *should* be fitted).

If you're worried about MOT, put a sock over each light.
If glass is vissible, it falls into the test, if it covered, it is out of the test.

Hmmmmm... I'm thinking "all lights fitted must work etc"

For the record, I have a 650 Dakar with a HID headlight, a pair of HID Hella Micro DE foglights at the front and a LED foglight at the rear. The extra lights area all independantly switched and all work and the bike has sailed through at least the last three MoT's with this setup, no need for taping or disconnecting anything. Different testing stations as well. :thumb2

My last GS had a TT Halogen fog on one side with a non-illuminated switch and relay through dipped beam and an TT HID spot on the other with no switch, just a relay through main beam. No comments from the two MOT tests it had.

Just tell your mot tester you think it's fine. That some fully qualified people that you don't know on the internet told you lots of different opinions, and some of them said thay think it's ok, and he can't fail you on non working reversing lights, if you had them fitted. . :D

Aye, print this thread off for him. :thumb2

HID main and dipped, HID spots controlled via autoswitch and additional spots linked to main beam.

Passed every MOT so far and never stopped.

A bit of useful info...........

MOT Tester's Manual available online.

Herewith a link to the Motorcycle MOT Test manual.

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/mc_contents.htm

Basically, any OBLIGATORY LAMPS (essentially the stuff that the manufacturer puts on) will be tested and must work (and yes, I know that a motorcycle constructed primarily for off-road use doesn't require indicators).

Note: Front fog lamps are not a requirement for the purposes of the MOT Test.

ADDITIONAL OPTIONAL LAMPS fall outside the scope of the MOT and should not be included in the test.

Hope that helps?

Yaarrpp!

Thanks, I'm sure my M.O.T tester will be reassured!:thumb2
My M.O.T tester is cool, so would probably pass me with floodlights on!
What about use on the road- with low beam/high beam/daytime/night time etc.
What can I do without being stopped by PC Plod?

Thanks

I can't speak for provincial plod but I work for met and my bike, which always has fog and headlight on, is driven into the station yard daily.never a problem.

It is actually illegal to use fog lights unless visibility is limited but sensible police officers realise that, within reason, it makes sense to ensure your bike can be seen.

Construction and use.

As a previous correspondant stated, nothing to do with MOT, everytning to do with construction & use.

Auxiliary spotlights or driving lights must extinguish when one dips, and may be fitted with a switch to inhibit their use. Thus, only available with main beam.

Auxiliary foglights are normally only available with sidelights or dipped headlights & extinguish with main beam.
Their use is prohibited except in conditions of fog or falling snow.

MOT do not check for either of the above, because they are not manditory lights.
