Auxiliary Lights - Spots help!

Greetings All.

I am fairly new to this place and I just found this forum section thankfully.

I've very recently purchased a 2002 R1150 GSA but quickly realised the lights for night time driving a rather inadequate. I've done some searching in this section today but have become a little overcooked with information and not really any the wiser - oops! :hammer

I want to be able to add some spotlights to the crash bars and I'd like them to come on with the ignition. I'd ideally like two sets I think or one set that has the capability to run less bright in the day and also bright with main beam.

I see that I can go with something like the Denali 2.0 range of lights that include a wiring harness [ that I think will work with the 1150GS ] and will do all of the above at a cost of £350+.

I've also seen what looks like reasonable CREE LED (?) spotlights on eBay for about £25 but that doesn't include any wiring to have them come on with ignition and the main beam switch, like the denali. Could anyone point me to a fairly straight forward way to do the above with the cheaper lights or is my best way to go with the Denali's?

100 quid is enough for a few lights.
Try these guys:
They sell good quality.
Wiring can be done outside of the Canbus.
 
Whichever lights you go for (I have hid50 - there's a lot of hardware compared to leds, but they work well) you might like to look into mounting them higher than the crash bars to make the most of the beams. Migsel do a good lightbar as on my bike below. Amazing improvement on stock.



Wire the lights in to switched circuits with a lock out switch so you can operate them seperately from the main lights - there are useful circuit diagrams for Hella aux lights on t'internet.

I'll have a look. Right now, I don't understand what componenets I need. I did find a place on eBay that sells just the Denali wiring loom. I was wondering if it's possible to just fit other CREE LED lights to that. That would be a good workaround if it was possible.

Ta, it was just about to go off to New Zealand and they want your bike properly clean, or it's 500 bucks to do it for you!

The wiring isn't that complex - I run relays as per the hella diagram but possibly not needed with leds as the current draw is so low. You need to find somewhere to mount the cutout switches, but there are plenty of options. I used handlebar mounted ones at one time, but the current setup has them mounted in the fairing. This is pretty straightforward

My fogs relay feed (+12V DC HI/LO/IGN on the schematic) are spliced into the pilot light, the spots into high beam.
 
I've got some led daytime runners that have two switches, one on and off and the second is a feed from the lights that tell them to dim when the lights are on at night if needed. They came with a ready built loom that senses the voltage output and turns on and off as voltage drops and dims if that function is desired.
I've also got a set of Hella FF50s wired from the battery through a relay that is triggered by high beam, again swithed on the handlebar so I can leave them off if needed. Both my lights are on a rugged road mount that sits under the oil cooler. FF 50 and high beam are great.
 
I have some Ring spot lights I got as brand new, old stock for £9.95 delivered. They replace the Ring spots that were there before (crash wiped one out). They are turned on and off by a long press of the indicator cancel switch (1 second). A short press cancels the indicators only. I can't take any praise for the wiring as it was like that when I bought the bike off Phil Reynolds, whether he did it or had it done I don't know - but it is a very simple workaround that in real life riding works well. The Ring lights I have angled down a bit because they are bright enough to barbecue a badger at 100 yards!:thumby:

is that on a 1200 or 1150?
 
That sounds spot on then. Just need to work out the how to do it or how to get hold of Phil 😁.

Auto switch from Nippy Norman’s for indicator cancel switch.

As for the ring lights...........I’d give them a swerve and go for a Set of FF50 hella if you want halogen, but my preference is always LED now. 24x7DIY.com do som nice little 3600lm spots that I have used in the past, they are amazingly good for their diminutive size. Yes they cost £150 or so, but they are well worth it (have a look around you might find them cheaper).

Mine are a bit heavy for most, but wow they are bright.
