Auxiliary lights - what am I doing wrong?

I have recently bought a 2014 spec GS1200 that had non working auxiliary lights that were badly wired with a separate on/off switch on the right hand bars.

I've checked that the lights work when directly connected to a spare 12v battery. I then wired in an appropriate relay directly to the battery terminals using the wiring diagram that came with it. When the bike engine is switched on, the light switch is sending power to the relay as the lights on the relay are active, but still no lights!

Its so frustrating that I can't seem to add any images to better describe the problem...

Measure the voltage output from the relay - to make sure it is working correctly , and the right voltage is coming through for the lights.
