Hi,

AVG Free version won't update on an XP desktop. Only Spybot running and it used to update but now it shows update running, like for ever.

Any ideas how to solve?

Are you running the latest version of AVG?

This comes with spyware protection too.

When I installed it on my nephew's machine it grumbled that another spyware detection programme was running. I had to disable Spybot to get it working properly.

Personally, on my own stuff I use Avast's free virus checker with Spybot.

Although, the nephew's machine is something of a guinea pig. If his machine remains free of viruses & spyware then I might switch to the single provider. My concern is that AVG will become as bloated and resource hungry as Norton & the other single solutions.

Latest AVG and latest Spybot.
Might try Avast...

Sounds like it's waiting for permission from your firewall to connect to the internet. Go to your firewall settings and make sure that AVG is one of your trusted applications. HTH :thumb

The free version of AVG doesn't conflict with Spybot, try re-installing and select 'Repair':thumb2

I've installed AVG on a number of PCs/laptops for a number of people.......after a fixed period (12 months?) you need to uninstall, download the latest version and start again ;-)

......bump!

Evening all

I'm experiencing exactly the same problem with AVG free on a Vista laptop. I have checked the firewall settings and been to AVG's support site. All should be well as Windows firewall should be letting it through.

Incidentally, Firefox is not getting through, but IE is.

Nearly at laptop-out-of-window stage, but not quite.:cool

Any ideas?

if its a corrupt CFT file you need to look it up on AVG help and download a very small file to remove the corrupt file... and then update AVG again

Thanks Tuned, and tried it....but to no avail. I've also uninstalled AVG and given it another try. AVG is enabled as an exception on the firewall list too.:(

Any more ideas, anyone? Are there any other invasive Vista bits and pieces that could be getting in the way?

In recent weeks AVG has been throwing up problems on a lot of machines regardless of of the operating sysytem, all seem to be as a result of the updating procedure which on the latest version is crap.
You should be able to fix most problems by downloading the latest installation file from the AVG server and then select 'Repair' during the installation procedure also remember you need another fecking toolbar like a hole in the head.

If you are getting the message 'cannot connect to server' even after performing a new installation or a repair you might have some sort of malware on your machine, it happened to a mates computer last week and resulted in the dreaded format drive and reboot windows from scratch.

If AVG carries on the way it has been I'm ditching it and giving Avast go.
