The Parador at Avila is a really nice hotel in a great location. The walled city provides plenty to explore when off the bike and there are some great roads nearby in the Sierra de Gredos and the national parks north of Madrid. Avoid the latter at weekends as they are rammed with day trippers from Madrid.

I took the half board rate and did not need lunch with those two large meals. They do a discounted rate for over 55s. I thought it was pretty good value at £150 a night including a bottle of wine with dinner. You would not get this standard of hotel and food for that sort of money in France or the UK.

As for Avila, it is quite compact inside the walls. Very touristy of course but again, great value. Sit outside a bar in the main square and a half litre of beer is just 4 euros and a coffee 2.50
