Just arrived home from a 1400 Mile trip around Scotland and discovered that my rear tyre has this very nasty crack around one of the tread blocks. The tyre has done less than 3000 miles and is five months old!

Has anybody else experienced this issue with Avon Distanzias?

The reason that I ask is my front tyre did the same and was replaced by Avon under warrantee. This is my third set of Distanzias and I love the tyres but am now getting concerned that there could be a quality issue?

If you look at the first photo you can see that the split goes around the top of the block which makes me think that the issue could be de-lamination?

That's a knife cut, IMV.

Point of entry is on the right/bottom of the pictures, where the rubber is crinkled i.e. sharp item pushed into the cut. The knife was dragged upwards and the knife veered to the right, suggesting the assailant is left handed.

I doubt the cut is more than a few mm deep. Personally, as long as the tyre held pressure I would carry on using it.

Interesting deduction Wessie… My wife is left handed and I am well insured :(

The deduction of the hand would depends if the person stood directly behind the bike or 2 one side and bent over the back tyre:nenau......but how are you and yer missus getting on lately:augie

It's the wife's birthday on Saturday... Think I'll but her a new tyre! If this is my last post it's been nice knowing you all :wife

You could have been braking which is more likely the time it will happen.

the direction is right (rolling) for it to cut the tyre, the curve as it hit and rolls over it at the start, then as the tyre loads onto it it gets pushed to the middle of the tread, then as the tyre rolls over it, it cuts the tyre

Can you insert a blunt object into the cut to see how deep it is ? I was pretty surprised at how thin a Tourance that I recently plugged actually was between the tread blocks.

Had something similar appear on a new Avon gripster on an airhead which had just been fitted for a return trip from Syria. It made it all the way back without getting any worse. Keep an eye on it it should be ok.

Ignore all this cut shite. Someone wants you dead.

You must be a bad man

Well I gave the wife a good beating but that didn’t work. Waterboarding did however and she finally came clean admitting that she was jealous that I spent so much time with “That Bitch in the garage” :D

I took “my bitch” to see Steve at F&B Tyres in Sandbach and when he removed the tyre we where able to see the extent of the damage. The cut was down to the belt and I never feck about with tyres so changed it with a new Avon Distanzia. Shit Happens I guess!
