Is there a way of showing the B roads in Basecamp? It seems they are lumped with minor roads as just two parallel uncoloured lines

It's a question of maps I think. I have a map called 'garmin GB Discoverer 50k all' and as you can see in the screenshot the roads come up in different colours.
That is just what I'm after. Not the B roads to the exclusion of all else, but the roads appropriately coloured... Motorways in blue, Trunk A roads in green, A roads in red B roads in brown and significant C roads in yellow, just as the 'AA'/GB Discover map. I'll have a ferret about and see if this can be loaded on my Basecamp.
It's a pity that you can't have "map themes" like you can with the 59x, XT and XT2 etc. I have a Michelin inspired one so the roads are coloured on the GPS just like their maps.
I've not tried themes on the XT, maybe worth a go, though a different issue to the one I'm trying to solve. Is there an OS 1:250,000 road atlas theme? That would be handy - more investigation! Thanks for the pointer.
It seems the Garmin GB 50K Discoverer maps are only available with some hand held units, not the XT unfortunately and I cannot find it available just for Basecamp

I'd suggest copying on the of the map themes that closely matches what you're after, and amending it on your computor, and give it a name of Orinoco mk1 etc.

Why not use MyRoute and select the OpenTopoMap layer?
Yiu may need to switch to Defaukt (OpenStreetMap) from Default HERE, in order to display it. That doesn’t matter but do tidy-up the route in HERE if you intend to run it on a Garmin device. It probably won’t matter too much if you don’t, though it’s best practice to do so.
Likewise, some of the other map layers might suit, too.

Just look at the map on Basecamp. The bigger roads are bigger roads. Whether it’s an A road or a B road doesn’t really matter much. just look at some of the A roads in the far North of Scotland. Many of you southerners would think them back lanes. Why them being a different colour on your mapping system matters I really don’t know.

It's not the A/B roads I'm interested in, and yes riding a single track lane in Scotland without hedges is a different experience to riding Devon and Dorset single track lanes - many lanes here are 5'-6' wide through holloways and high hedges with little in the way of a straight section or passing places... that's why being able to identify the width of a road for unclassified roads is handy. As they say in the USA YMMV
It's a bit tricky, but the B roads in white tend to be a bit wider on the Basecamp map than the single tracks. If I am planning the route and am unsure and want to avoid single track roads, I do a quick cross check with google street view.
