Bad engine noise!

Caps are in place on the throttle bodies, I've sprayed Easy start all round the inlets, no air leaks.
Sweet Jesus don't use that on one of these if there is a split stick coil it will ignite the easy start, WD 40 or some sort of penetrating oil but not such a highly flammable liquid is a better bet

Just take it step by step and diagnose and move on

As a matter of interest try popping off one of the vacuum caps at a time when you start it from cold and control the air into it with your finger and see if you can get the idle to smooth out Which would prove the stepper motor theory

If it's not the alternator, though here's hoping
I wondered if a cam chain guide had broken down? It sounds a bit random, though consistently there, so I envision the chain bouncing around...

Botus makes a good point too, albeit slightly unlikely based on where you think the sound are coming from.

75k miles - a compression test - they drop valves at high mileage - and at least it will get us past catastrophic nastiness and if that shows big issues you'll know to stop running ti before it gets nasty

steptoe's thoughts on the noise would be of interest....

Does the noise reduce, disappear or change at all with the clutch pulled in. My ears are not good enough to tell from the vid but my hexhead rattles the gearbox when cold and at idle. Pulling the clutch in (on mine!) makes the rattle stop.

Oh dear…. Now you know why it was cheap in a trade sale.

there was a post on nasty gearbox noises before Christmas - turns out they made some badly and a shaft gets far more slop than it should and it sounds like death - on the output or input shaft inside the gearbox (I forget which) they have a cush-drive, under load (AKA riding) the slop is taken up - on the centre stand it rattles like the whole rear bevel is self destructing

On my hexhead, the input shaft torsion damper self-destructed. A new input shaft was almost £500.

I made a new outer cage for the damper unit but then decided just to fit a brand new input shaft instead along with new bearings and seals throughout and be done with it.

Rather than all this guessing poking and prodding, trial and error.
I would just take it a proper bike mechanic before it ends up worse.

I decent mechanic will probably know exactly what it is and fix it with Genuine parts
giving you piece of mind that something wont fail at 80mph!

Well aren;t you just a little harbinger of Doom!!

The guy restore bikes Its just a new breed to him

He has the ability and now some guidance where to Look!

IF those guidelines don't work Then he can make up his mind to take it to a BM specialist or Continue himself!

He doesn't mention its a project bike that he wants to learn from and play with.
for all i knew this could have been his everyday bike getting him to work and back, meaning if its off the road for long it will cost him more than a few parts.

If it is a project then fair play, let him tinker 😁

New noise! Its the alternator, when I turn it by hand (no belt) its stiff to turn, and every few turns it sticks, and needs a bit of effort to move.
So thats that: I can get a brand new Bosch unit for £180 plus shipping, from France.
But why is it now chirping away???

if you look at the top of some recent posts a seized alternator seems to be a common issue

you have to give German's credit for inventing these special failure modes... ummm further back than I thought https://www.ukgser.com/community/threads/siezed-alternator-again.369417/

your bike doesn't sound rattley enough now - they normally sound like a cement mixed with a bag of nails running round - did someone have the cam chain bow tight or clearances closed down

I'm sure many of us would love to know where you can get a brand new alternator for £180 plus shipping? I've seen used ones go for more than that.

There's 2 listed on ebay...but they are "out of the office" until the end of 2024. Did seem too good to be true! Maybe they will reply, their feedback score is good, lots of sales, I'll let you know.
My local auto electrical place say they should be able to rebuild it, need to take it in and they will check it. If its just a bad bearing I might be able to do it myself, done a few car ones, but I'm concerned about the high voltage at the battery. Let the experts have a look I think.
Is the new noise anything bad?

Hopefully as you've caught it before it seizes, it can be rebuilt, when they seize it also splits the outer casing creating a lump of scrap metal:mad:

Yep: used ones are indeed around £180. Not sure whats going on with the ebay listing, must be a scam, you can still place an order... Not right at all!

New noise! Its the alternator
Is this new noise in addition to the `original` noise?
Where`s the rumbly/grumbly original noise gone, i can`t hear it in the new vid just the whine of the alternator?

The belt is off! Alternator is not connected, meaning (surely ) the rattle was coming from the alternator...

The chirrping sound...not entirely sure what is making that sound?
