Ballon buggered

The D465 Ballon d'Alsace road has been treated to the ministrations of the gravel lorries and is almost unridable (as of last weekend) so don't make a special journey, despite it being a very fine road. Last w/e the section from St Maurice up to the cafes was gravelled, but I suspect the section from the cafes down to Malvaux will have been done by now too.

There were a bunch of Brit bikers up there being very shirty about French road maintenence on Saturday, I kept my counsel

Year and years ago, (pre LWR ) one of the reasons I bought a GS was because of the roads works at the top of the Pyrenees - miles of deep gravel diversion off the main road.

Ill be there early August so the loose stuff will be nicely pilled up on the outside of bends and in the middle of the road should be fun.

In France they send a machine around that hoovers up the much of the surplus gravel. its by no means perfect though.

We did the route Des Cretes last week and the gravel is still bad. The weather was even worse with fog and rain.

We got back Friday from the Vosges , weather has been crappy, but no gravel problems encountered at the ballon.

Looks like they cleaned up the road for the TDF
