just half dropped my bike while putting it away for the night and hot the auxilery light off my other bike and snapped the part that connects it to the crash bars.....

the light works fine an its just the plastic shell thats broken

douse anyone know where i can get a replacement shell for the light instead of spending a shit load on a new lighting kit?!

(bmw r1200gs adventure and its the original auxillery lights left hand side one)

BMW sell em

BMW call them a mounting ring.

£13 when I got one two weeks ago :blast

It's just the front half of the light shell and includes the mount stub that breaks so easily.

oh an also mark is there a **cough cough** discount **cough cough** for being a member?? :P

joe

Matey, there is no `formal` discount as such because as the price of stainless went through the roof I didn`r raise my prices but for an order of several items I am sure i can do something, least of all reduce the postage!

Seriously....don't bother replacing the BMW OEM lights with the same....the new ones will snap off in exactly the same way nest time you drop it (I've even seen them just snap when doing offroading, just by the inertia of the lamp itself snapping the cheesy plastic when going down a bump)

Do a quick search on here and you'll see it has been commented on hundreds of times.

Mr Hooton's cages may well protect the light unit itself from getting a knock, but the bracket will still snap if the bike is dropped.....the unit is simply too heavy for the plastic when loaded up with the inertia of a drop.

Change the lights for something better.....:thumb2

yeah i know what you mean but lights cost a SHIT load! altho i am thinking of trying to sort a harder case for them and transfer the light units to them

The case isnt the problem though.

I bet if you lay the bike over onto a bit of carpet (get some assistance if it's the first time you've done it) the lights won't actually make contact with the deck......they won't, unless the bike rolls over past 90 degrees on the pots AND there is something (like a rock) sticking up to meet the lights.

The problem is the cheapo cheesy plastic mounting tab....unless you replace/reinforce that, there's a good chance of the same thing happening again and again, even if the lights NEVER TOUCH THE GROUND IN A DROP.

Yes, HID PIAAs or top of the range spots or whatever can cost a lot, but you can make up a bit of steel bar and bung some spotlights from Halfords on for less than £50 all in.....they will look just as good, work just as well but won't snap off unless they really take a good smacking by a proper rock, in which case, the lights will be the least of your worries.

Fanums right - the plastic bracket is quite poor and the replacement costs are nasty - mine fell over recently and did £394 worth of damage, screen, bar, some brackets and mirror only

My covers WONT fully protect the lights and I am obviously not saying this to simply sell you anything but as I said they are better than nothing.

personally, i think BMW need to rethink how they are attached to the bike so in a fall they wont easily snap off. It`s not up to us to have to buy stuff to protect a bad design IMHO.

And thank you for any order - i`m hoping to sort out the square carrier on Monday but I am hoping that the price isn`t silly - shouldn`t be as all my stuff so far has been priced much lower than what it should cost for made to order hand finsihed stuff. I may even send you a `prototype` (I can assure you it will be more than useable) free coz I feel your pain about the cost of BMW parts :thumb2

ok mate, ta, - would you do me a favour? Would you email me at [email protected] tying up your forum name with the name or identity on the payment so i know its the same person!

That way I`ll have some chance of remembering to include a complimentary`prototype` square bottle holder - you will have to use your own straps but i guess you will be ok with that? :thumb2

Yes know the feeling had to lay my TB down in a wet car park two days after I picked it up from the dealers, felt such a dick picked it up so quick with all that rush going through my veins "like picking up a push bike" no damage done though went out and bought some enigine covers that same afternoon.
