Sat on roadside right now waiting for BMW. Riding along happily then muted bang with loss of power and clouds of blue smoke. Oil on centrestand and on ground but not much. It has just had new clutch. Anyone had this before or know what has happened? Cheers.

how s your warranty looking? .. the clouds of blue smoke tend to be bad news - new engine needed bad news... 2-3k incl labour on OE , prob cheaper at local experts...

Is the oil engine type or gearbox. Gearbox GL5 does stink compared to engine oil in my experience. Loss of power  no battery power, no engine rotation and revs, or lots of engine revs and no forward motion with the clutch in?

Call me suspicious, but a recent clutch change and then you have a problem

Under extended warranty:-) that paid for recent clutch failure and rear frame crack. Loss of power was just that. One minute throttle working, next minute it does nothing, not even change the noise from the engine. Nearly at bahnstormer now. Hope they can fix it quickly.

As they say, it depends where the oil is coming from and what sort it is. If there's blue smoke coming out of the exhaust then it's the engine. A bang suggests something has let go like a valve. This is bad.

If it's gearbox oil or engine oil dropping onto the exhaust then the smoke will be from the outside of the pipes.

As John says, there may be a link with the new clutch like an oil seal failure, not doing up the clutch retaining bolts properly and so on.

Need more info' to properly diagnose but anything that produces a bang, smoke and oil isn't healthy. Sorry.

Update

Nice one BMW Emergency Service...all sorted and home just over 3 hrs later than anticipated. Well worth it if you thinking of buying the BMW extended insured warranty. The techs at Bahnstormer did a premliminary inspection and found that the spark plugs were totalled seized and couldn't be pulled out so it sounds fairly drastic. They are stripping the bike tomorrow. Nice hire car for 2 days for free!

Sounds like the dreaded dropped valve syndrome. Should 'only' be one side though...

+1 from the couch mechanic here... apparently valve going for piston visits is not unheard of?

Have you been giving it the beans from cold often? BMW tractor twins dont like it...

Right hand exhaust valve into engine

Looking on search of forum it seems like you're right...classic symptoms of right hand exhaust valve dropping into cylinder. we'll see what engineers say tomorrow. i am going to push for new engine and new exhaust. i never really over rev it but i did have the clutch slipping before they replaced it last week so i suppose it could have been that. just got the engine run in too at 20,000 miles

Same symptoms as a mates 54 reg 1200. His was right hand piston failure. Loss of power, awful noise. Repaired by Bahnstormers.

Good luck.

Extended Warranty - no cover for valves

Sounds like valves aren't covered by the extended warranty....here's hoping for BMW goodwill....

How the fu*k is that possible? Sounds like a bloomin joke and also sounds like someone is trying to take the pi*s out of you.

Are you sure? Who's telling you this? Where in the small print in the t's and c's of the extended warranty does it state that? Do you have an electronic copy of the t's and c's you could post here? Would be intrigued to read it...
