A few mates and myself are heading over the channel for a couple of days in France. If we're looking for great roads and (secondary) scenrey, do we go inland or hug the coast going west?

head south to the Ardennes. Sedan is a nice enough place for a couple of nights and has loads of nice roads. You can ride through 4 countries in a short circular route. Logis de France have a reasonable place there http://www.logis-de-france.fr/uk/re...d=12&lang=EN&action=fastadvsearch&logis=sedan

A cheaper hotel option, an F1, can be found in the larger Charleville Mezieres a few km away.

Seconded. :thumb

As you live in Newark, or seem to, I wouldn't bother trecking to the west side of France at all. Time wasted. the coast road is nothing special either.

I have just come back from a four day trip / holiday to Bouillon (Saturday through Tuesday) which is in the Belgian Ardennes, but it might as well be French. I intend to do a basic write up when I have finished my insurance battles. http://www.info-bouillon.co.uk/

Easy run of about 280 miles, central London to the hotel, via the train. Motorway to roughly Lille, then A and B roads all the rest of the way.

Simply get a decent Michelin local map and it's easy to plot routes and fun....

Great roads in the area, loads of hotels in the town.

It's about 145 miles to the Nurburgring (we went on Sunday) again mostly on pretty fun roads. Check the 'Ring's opening times though. Cut out the 'ring and you can have three days away, with still loads of fun.

Spent Monday hooning around the local roads, up to Givet and back to Bouillon. http://www.givet.fr/indexenglish.html

Tuesday, left the hotel in Bouillon at 10:00 AM. Tramped on a bit but still stopped for well over an hour en route, making the 15:15 (French time) train (just) and home in central London for 16:30.

Perfect.

Failing that....do a search for my suggested four day break, with routes etc. down to Dijon. Cut it a bit short and finish at, say, Chatillon-s-S or even Troyes...

Failing that, do a search for my jaunt to St Omer and then down to Arras and Vimy Ridge. Good roads, half decent hotels from very cheap to medium.

A map and a bit of imagination will give you all the answers you need.

Have fun...take care....and don't forget your travel / breakdown insurance...it's only four days but a lot can happen........it's dirt cheap, too.

Thanks for the advice guys. Ardennes it is then! Hopefully, the sun will shine, the roads will be twisty and the beers will be copious and cold.

I have a great cross country route from the chunnel to Lille if you like. GPS...

Plus despite Wapping, and having lived in Belgium for fifteen years, Bouillon is not "basically french" it is basically Belgian, therefore generally nicer people and cheaper prices...

+1

Follow the Meuse river south from Namur to Dinant then break off in to "Little Switzerland" - should be lovely this time of year.

"Roule cool mon pidgeon" !!!

and if you are drinking on the Belgian side of the border make sure you know what % ABV the beer is before you sink the third 500ml glass in an hour...

'It might as well be French....' woz wat i sed....

Not meant to upset, it's a really nice place.....:beerjug:

No problem:beerjug:

Cheers. :beerjug:

Thanks for the cross country route to Lille. I will give it a go, next time I head that way.

There were hundreds of bikes out last weekend in the Bouillon area. A huge number of Dutch bikes and a host of BuMW's on some sort of organised road rally or press event.

If you do "GPS" I will send you the file...

The sun shone, the roads were magnificently twisty and the beers were indeed copious and cold! We ended up staying in La Roche on Belgium and did a couple of days riding out from there on great roads in Belgium and Luxembourg. Thanks for the advice all. We'll be going again for a longer break in late summer.
