Barrie Robson (York) - Dealer NOT

Thanks Guys!

Glad I spotted this thread. I'm likely to be moving to Wensleydale in a couple of years and I'd scoped out Robson's as the nearest dealership to where I hope to end up for service etc.

.....................Looks like I'll be going elsewhere!

Just so you are aware- Barrie Robson ( or his staff at least) are aware of this thread ;) They drew my attention to it when I emailed them about East Midlands Event raffle prizes- fair enough that they didn't feel like contributing .....

Would be nice if one of them stepped forward and answered some of the criticism :( Perhaps dialogue is the answer

They really should, cos it's already turning prospective customers away.

I now live just 5 miles from them and my bike needs its annual/18k in the next couple of weeks. I was going to ring them up today but am now looking at the AJ website which is a bit of a trek considering....

Can they afford to let people that buy new bikes every year slip through their fingers just because they won't answer some criticism on the internet? :nenau
Business must be good.

BMW Response

I knew I had the BMW response somewhere, just took some time to find it. I forgot I had also referenced this thread to BMW to give an overview.

The main part goes as follows:

I am aware of the Internet forum you have mentioned in your email, so I have taken the time to read the details which you have posted. We monitor the performance of all our dealerships, including Barrie Robson Motorcycles, to ensure that they are delivering the high standard of customer service that we expect. I would like to apologise that your experiences to date have fallen below our expectations and, more importantly, your own. We rely on feedback from our customers to highlight any areas in which possible improvements may need to be made and I would like to thank you for taking the time to write to us with your experiences.

Although Barrie Robson Motorcycles are an Approved BMW Motorrad Dealership, they are a franchised business and as such, operate under the own processes. BMW Approved Dealerships do contact their customers following a service visit, however, these are based on a random selection. Therefore, not all customers will be contacted each time for their feedback.

Due to the nature of your concern, it is with regret that I am unable to address your disappointment in this instance. As a representative of BMW UK, I will certainly register your concerns as a complaint, which we will then discuss internally with the dealership. Please accept my sincere apologies for the frustration this matter has caused you. If I can be of any further assistance with regards to this, or any subsequent matter, please do not hesitate to contact me using the details provided below.

Whilst this obtained no immediate action, it does show how the forum can be put to good use.

Can't be the same Barrie Robson I use at times? I have been treated well by Barrie Robson, good deals and quality service. His mechanic, Martin, is excellent. Barrie has always had time for a chat and a cup of coffee. Equally so I have been treated well by Rainbow and Alan Jefferies, although a recent experience with me stranded by a tyre fitter cutting through my ABS cable, has made me appreciate the helpfulness of Alan Jefferies, the ONLY Yorkshire dealer who would fit me in at short notice (an hour). Other dealers including the one I bought the bike from couldn't see me for a week meaning I would miss my tour of Ireland and Scotland. Therefore Jefferies will get my next bike purchase (I purchase a lot of bikes!). I am not disagreeing with any of you I am just saying my experience has been different.

Yep, Martin's a first rate mechanic and I'd say Kevin knows what customer service is. It could be so very different in York.......

Shame it has got to this

I have been using Barrie Robson since 2005 and during that time have recommended them to others of which two have purchased bikes from them. All of us would use them again and have no issues with BR or the team.

I picked up my second BR GS from them yesterday and while we were chatting the subject of this thread came up. I must admit that I don't look at the dealer section much so the slagging BR has been getting was news to me.

I can only speak as I find and I find them fine. They have never lied to me or ignored me and on the only occasion in four years when they got something wrong they righted it and apologised without delay.

I am now on my second BR bike which they did me a good deal on including part ex. I even shipped them extras direct from other suppliers which they fitted for free. When I could not get down to pick up the bike as soon as it was ready they photographed it and sent me the images.

Perhaps I am from the old school but I think that some of the contributors to this thread have a shortage of manners and that personnel insults and incitement to post excrement should be removed by the moderators.

Complaints are well and good but lets keep the site a knowledge base and not let it be dragged down to the level which many riders I know would not wish to be associated with.

Just for the record I have no personal or business link to BR but after the good work they have done for me I felt that I should post my thoughts.

Should'nt remove any post's. Feedback works both ways. Im glad you have a good relationship with this dealer. but obviously others havnt. and not just one or two.

Your quote:

Its the manners of this dealer that has got it to this
So stop being a silly billy:rob

Feedback. Forums, all good, as both sides are always seen. :thumb

ahg.

Do you honestly think I go to Jeffries (200mile roundtrip) or Southport superbikes (300 mile roundtrip)...just for a ride

I am talking from personal experience like many others on this thread,
as for manners, try educating BR with a few !!

+1 on all of that.......:thumb2 :clap

I've gotta say that the first time I went in there I thought BR didnt really want to sell me a bike, I felt that I was in the way and he really didnt want to try to help:mad: Subsequent visits I have dealt with Kevin and the lovely lady behind the desk and they have been very helpfull, polite and so on:thumb2
last time I went in - 4 weeks ago - BR positively nice and approachable:eek::nenau

Sorry if this upsets the trend:thumb

Maybe he's learning or has realised his attitude is damaging his business? If so then this thread has been productive. I don't know the guy but this site is hard to ignore when it is dedicated to BMW's biggest selling model. This has had 2500 views!

Why I don't like this guy

Background info.

My mate bought a 05 GS1150 Adv from Barrie Robson BMW 2 years ago.
He took the bike for a MOT about a month ago and was told the VIN number on the bike didn’t match up with the DVLA records.
After a phone call to BR, it turns out they sold 2 identical bikes to 2 brothers on the same day in 2005, and somehow the bikes ended up with the wrong number plates hence the mix up. Not good but shit happens? :nenau
So BR offers to send a van down to pick up the bike and call in the other owner. He said the easiest solution would be to swap the number plates over and then re-register the bikes to the new owners and send them back. My mate wasn’t happy with this as it would obviously add another owner to the log book and mix up service history and everything else. BR now agrees to pick up bikes and contact DVLA and explain the error. So that’s what happened. He picked up my mates bike and agreed to MOT and service it while DVLA examined the bikes and changed the VIN numbers over on the V5s. This process took 3 weeks and my mate had the bike back last Thursday.

Problem.

About a month before he found out about this mix up, my mate had 2 new coil sticks fitted by Mike at Cardiff Motorrad, as the old ones had started to break down. These coils cost about £55 each and the bike ran much better with the new ones.
Anyway, when he took the bike out for the first run after the above issue, he noticed the bike was miss-firing a bit. He called BR and was told that they had not noticed any problems and it was nothing to do with them.
When we pulled the coils to check the plugs, one coil stick was obviously a knackered one. It was rusty and swollen while the other was brand new. They also have the date of manufacture stamped on them. One was 09 (new). The other was 03 (old and rusty)
BR denies any wrong doing but has offered to send out a new coil stick.
To my mind that is robbery, and I would recommend that anyone dealing with this rouge thinks twice.

Trading standards

Id get TS involved in that, and maybe more,im a bit of a mechanical numpty but if that failed at motorway speeds is there not a possibility that he could have a get off.............At least thats what id be screaming down the phone to anyone who'd listen.............

Seems as if he has put right his mistake, was the MOT and service thrown in? Are you absolutely sure that Cardiff Motorrad changed both?

Yes, he did do the MOT for free, and said he serviced it, but that's not much for 3 weeks without bike. Anyway, after all that has gone on here, I wouldn't be sure he did anything he said he would do.
The coils were defo both new because we took them both out and greased them up to protect them.
A mistake? I don't think so. How can you take out a shiny new coil, undo the connector and then put a rusty old one back in by mistake? :nenau
