Sorry if this had been mentioned before but I have searched the forum. I've been using Mapsource with my 550 very successfully for ages. Now I've got a 660 I've gone on to Basecamp which I find nowhere near as intuitive. For instance if, on my PC I plot a route from home to Poole, very straightforward, A35 nearly all the way there it takes me on long digressions around Crewkerne and down to Weymouth as though there are waypoints already placed. (If I do the same route on the device it gets it right). I feel as though a box is checked somewhere that need unchecking, something like 'prettiest route' but I can't find anything. Can anyone help?

The Bike calculation tends to be more scenic, although in your case...

Unfortunately Garmin have tried to 2nd guess what motorcyclists, and other road users, want out of routing. The activity profiles, that drop down list of vehicle types, dictate a range of avoidances specific to each profile.

Either use the car profile as you have already done or make adjustments to the profile to either suit your riding or to nullify.

Mapsource could be adjusted in the same way but it would be the same for all. Started out with a null setting though.

Will Basecamp work with a 2610?

Yes it will and it copes with using openstreetmaps -so you can have up to date maps too.

I too find Basecamp hard work but I suspect that is because I have been using Mapsource for 10 years. I use mapsourse daily during the summer, making routes for guests etc. I often download routes to several different units in the mornings so I guess I know my way around Mapsourse now.

Basecamp is different and will take a while to get to know but since Mapsource is no longer supported by Garmin it can only be a matter of time. Having said that there are still 660s being advertised as coming with Mapsource.

John,
Apparently it won't ... first oportunity to try loading North America NT 2013.3 and the message is 'This is not supported by my device (2610)'

Looks like I'll have to fork out for a later model .. anybody know if there are any model changes due?

The 2610 uses pre NT mapping, hence the suggestion to use OpenStreetMap data which will work with the 2610.

OpenStreetMap is peer generated open source mapping. In terms of coverage it's as good as the current Garmin mapping in most areas and better in quite a few. It's, generally, up to date as it can be and again usually better than the Garmin data. Route calculation may vary as the road attributes will be different, that doesn't mean worse... just different. It does lack some road attributes in comparison, for example there won't be speed limit data but that's not relevant on the 2610 anyway. There are plenty of POI included in the data as well.

The site linked to above provides both mapping for your GPS and to install in Basecamp or Mapsource. The mapping is far bigger than the mapping you already have in terms of MB/sq mile as it has far more data. It'll also be bigger than the current NT mapping as the latter is a compressed format. This means that you won't be able to fit all, or even half, of Europe onto a 2GB CF card (max size for 2610) but you should be able to fit sufficient on for all but the most ambitious of tours.

Another big plus is that there are no unlocking shenanigans, just install and go :JB

I seriously suggest that you give it a try, especially if you're fond of saving a few bob...

After the 2610 came the 2720 and 2820, both outwardly similar in appearance but running NT mapping and quite a few features not found on the 2610. I have a 2720 that's waiting to go on eBay ATM ;)

That's a different problem, that's not the routes, it's the mapping. Easy to sort just use openstreetmap instead of Garmin maps
