Basic sat nav recommendations please

I was going to say I've been using Tomtom on my iPhone with a BT headset for a few years. As long as you remember to lock the phone in portrait mode (Otherwise it flip flops around when cornering) it works absolutely brilliantly.

I have mine in a RAM X_Grip mount, ridermount 2.1A USB socket and Lifeproof waterproof case.

I have just picked up a Garmin Zumo 220 for my KTM (Second hand on fleabay - £82), more for the fact that its easier to upload preplanned routes, than any improvement in terms of the app vs. a standalone satnav.

Don't be daft. Both motorcycle and car mounts (for the 390 anyway) are included in the box ... as you would expect.

of course they are - I wouldn't expect any different??

not so easy when you want "additional" mounts - that's a fact, not daft

Have you thought about Rupse?
I have the older version, they run IGO8 sofware and whilst I've not used it abroad it's more than capable in the UK so I've no reason it won't work as well away from these shore.

Smartphone sat nav's are not good on a bike, especially for what you have requested........ No voice, but be able to see.......... Smartphone's are just not bright enough, or water resistant.

I've had the Garmin 550, 660 and now the 590. Your best bet is the 660 for it's wider/larger screen and bigger memory for the updates. I'm also not sure how much longer Garmin will support the 550.

The choice is your to make, so good luck with whatever you go for.

you've actually missed their biggest drawback - they don't work with gloves. you need an enclosure, unless you but a waterproof model (sony experia perhaps?), you need an enclosure. they do voice though, and they are faster, simpler and update in the background with no fucking about like garmin. i can see mine ok.

they have one other advantage - they do a great many other things as well. some even make phone calls.

neither is perfect, that's why i have both. i had the phone anyway, and thought the OP may well have one too.

You could always use your existing car one, in a waterproof case or in a RAM cradle. Or buy a new car one with lifetime maps for around £100.

We can do mounts for either.

A recent trip to Europe has finally (again) bought home to me the fact that I really do need a sat nav.
In the past I've been, and still am really, a dedicated map person although I do have an old Tom Tom in the car.
Getting lost every day became simply a big pain in the bottom, especially in Germany where my knowledge of the language is near to zero.

I don't need bluetooth or MP3 capabilities neither of which I understand if the truth be known, which will possibly also give you a guide to the age bracket I'm in.
I don't want to use base camp, be able to plot a twisty route, know my mpg, my service log or my tyre pressures.

I would like the beast to work in the car though and I'd like it to talk to me in the car but not the bike.
I need to be able to get brackets to fit it to the bike and the car if need be in case they aren't included.
My guess is I'm looking for some older sat nav model but I would like lifetime map updates and the ability to choose quickest or shortest routes.
Nearest petrol station would be a nice touch but not essential.

Think that is all, thank you for listening.

Garmin Zumo 220
Great bit of kit, new for the price of a second hand 550.
Had mine 2 yrs & would buy another no problem.....

I think Cookie is definitely in the 'Phone' gps camp.

And they are so good, everybody uses them. And no body buys bike sat nav's.................................................... Or do they ?

Most folk I know have " bike sat navs "
So yes they still buy them. ........

My smart phone stays safely in my waterproof jacket pocket.. ....

I paid a visit to the local bike shop today to chew the fat about Sat Navs that he was selling.
He offered me a Garmin 390LM for what I thought was a very good price so a deal was done and my search is now over.
Thanks for your help folks, most appreciated.

garmin nuvi 765. same functionality as a 660 but around £30 on ebay. Now and again only though. Then a waterproof case, ram mount and lead. All in around £60 quid. Done me proud for 3 years now..
