Just spent two hours fitting the rubber gaiter between the gearbox and the swinging arm - even then it didn't fit absolutely flush...I got the gaiter from Motorworks...is the gaiter specific to my bike (R100GS) or do they send out fit all gaiters? I can't believe it's that difficult to fit.

That sounds normal - they can be a pain, particularly when new.

I disconnect the rear shock and block-up the rear wheel to get the swing arm level, then use a piece of thick bent wire to spread the gaitor around the back of the gearbox.

Its easier with the exhaust collector box removed - but that's just too much hassle :blast

You are not alone :thumb

Bob.

Take the bike off the center stand and get someone to sit on it. Makes it less of a stretch and far easier to do.

gaiter

i use a snap on radiator tool . part no sga173br .round off the tip before using . had mine for years , i used to be a windscreen fitter and used it to fit string in screens .:thumb

Warm it up with a hot air gun or a hair dryer. Makes it much easier.

I'd go with the removal of the shock and block up the rear wheel to get a better angle on the gaiter.Whichever way you cut it, it's a pain.

The wire thing sound like a good idea, I can barely feel the end of my fingers...thanks for the tips...I thought I'd stopped worrying about split rubbers....!!!

if you're working on a para, be sure it's orientated correctly, or you'll be doing it again when the UJ wears through the new gaiter DAMHIK :blast

I use a piece of SS tig wire with a return bend/then bent at 90 degrees
No sharp edges to rip the rubber
same technique works with a tight Durex on yer todger - so Jaber says :D

This is one of those tasks that I'd given up on. If I still haven't sorted it by next June then it can be job no. 1 at Airhead Weekend 2012:)
You can all bring your special bits of bent wire and we can see what works best.

Do you use a jubilee type clip to keep it in place or just a large cable-tie?

bastard rubber gaitor

Did g/box on mine so got new gaitor from Sherlocks, fitted it,VERY stiff rubber! Could not stop it leaking on s/arm end, after numerous attempts swopped it for original one, cured.

I struggled with mine for hours too. Now I take out the battery box so i can get behind it, take off the back wheel Undo the shock & tie up the para with a bit of rope level with the gbox. It took me a few tries to realise it's getting the para level thats the secret.
Although it sounds like a lot more work I find it a 2 minute job now to out the gaiter on & far less frustrating. Don't use grease to try to slip it over easier:augie

.
I find easier as well to remove the battery box and keep the swing arm in line with the gearbox, but also I remove the pivot bolts from the swing arm which allows you to move the swing arm very close to the gearbox making it much easier.
