HG Battery Charger query

Hi all

I have a Hien Gerecke 'Professional' battery charger, is this compatable with my F800GS & could I plug it straight into the socket or would I need a separate charging lead straight on to the battery? any info gratefully recieved...

Cheers

F

You can't plug this into the OEM socket on the bike - this socket is powered via the Canbus.

You must wire a connection directly to the battery. Nippy Norms has them or you could get the TT Instrument cover which comes with a socket you can wire directly. (I did this - useful as it provides power when the iginition is off)

I had a feeling you could charge the battery from the aux socket. Ask your dealer.

Otherwise it's worth wiring something up to the battery that's accessible after you've stuck the faux tank cover back on again, otherwise it's a real pain to take the cover off every time you want to stick the battery on trickle charge.

Shouldn't have needed a trickle charge in less than a week

19,000 miles in the last 12 months and not had a problem. Anything extra wired up to your bike madmammoth ?

i've never trickle charged it, i have left it 6 weeks before and it started no problem, Its only started over the winter.
I have the tomtom cable wired straight from the battery but thats been on since i got the bike and rarely use it.
I was thinking it could be the alarm and immobilizer that might be slowly draining it:nenau

tomtom cable is the problem, I did the measurements and it use 6-7 mAp (?) when connected. After disconnecting the cable no problem anymore.

Well in my book I'd throw the alarm, all it's wires, ancilliary bits'n cables right out of the window

I spent 10 years in the stolen vehicle squad....

The alarm is only ever any good if you yourself can hear it

The imobilizer will only ever imobilize the rightful owner... never a thief
Nine out of ten bike thefts the bike is lifted straight in to the back of a van ... Imobilizer's? Ha....

:beerjug:

Yeah, but you're not having battery problems, and he is.

Tim... if it's a battery problem he wants a new battery

If it's a charging problem, or a drain on the battery, then that is a different issue... he needs to know which is what ... and why!

Process of elimination...

Battery?
Charging problem?
Drain on battery?

Battary Charger

Can anyone recommend a charger that can be connected via the accessory socket to keep permanently connected when the bike is not being used (800GS)

Easiest way is to hook it up to an optimate, wired directly to the battery.

Lots of posts elsewhere, but the short of it is the BMW OEM accessory socket is controlled by the canbus. As such it will disconnect the power (and therefore any charger) after about 2 mins.

You need a direct connection to the battery unless you want to fork out for the BMW specific charger which I understand "talks" the canbus into remaining connected.

Quite possibly the worst thing you can do though no doubt all the "experts" will say otherwise.
Your book pack that came with the bike will have a small leaflet with it containing information on how to look after the AGM battery thats fitted to the bike.
The main thing it says on it is not to leave a charger connected permanently to preserve the so called memory effect etc but to charge the battery for a max period of 24 hrs if the bike is going to be stood for long periods ie months every 3 to 4 weeks.

Correct. The BMW specific charger for connection through the accessory socket on Canbus bikes (12GS/ 8GS etc) is this one:

Only available from BMW dealers, costs an arm + a leg (USD $160), as far as I know is the only one that allows connection thru accessory socket, can be left plugged-in indefinately, and does work on the 8GS. I'm sure any UK BMW dealer will be happy to take your GBP :D

Charging the battery on an F800 GS

Can I charge the battery on my F800 GS via the power socket beside the ignition switch?

Do I need a Din plug with terminals to attach to my Battery Tender Jr?

Battery_Tender_Junior.jpg

The Battery Tender Jr came with a lead that I leave fixed on my KTM battery and simply plug the charger there. When not inuse, lead just lays inside airbox.

It also came with a set of clamps that you can plug the charger to. I want to avoid taking off the cover to put the clamps straight on the battery...

Any thoughts?
