Batteries, chargers and replacements

...anyone know how long (days, weeks) you can leave the 800 standing (obviously without running the engine at all) before finding the battery flat?
....anyone use the BMW "intelligent" battery charger?...is it worth the money?

Cheers....

I guess it could last a month or so.
But as there is so much electronic inside I'd guess it "could" last a month or more, but... not good for it.

As for the second question, I was "forced" to stay away from the bike for 6 weeks :(
So decided to buy that BMW charger!
Kind of expensive though but it could stay months on the bike (they say) and looks strong enough to last ages
Cheers
:)

i put an optimate on mine, the garage even agreed with the choice!!!

The Optimate needs a direct connection to the battery though, not via the (canbus controlled) socket..?

FWIW I did 6 hours yesterday with grips on and a BMW heated vest.. no problems at all... IMVHO it's the aux lighting that's causing the majority of over-drawing problems.. Goodness only knows how I'm going to power my string of fairy-lights this christmas. ...:augie

Optimate ok to use?

Hi, giving the bike a Christmas break and was going to plug it into my Optimate.

Can I use on my 800GS?

Many Thanks

Tim

Plug it in and forget about it til you want to ride it again ... the optimate is designed to be left on... never done my bikes any harm :thumb

My 650 twin has been stored in the garage for 4 weeks now, its about 8 months old. The alarm has not been activated, how long before the batt goes too low to start it and gets damaged? Optimates, do they need attaching direct to the battery or is there a way of just plugging it in to the 'cigar' adapter thingy? Will it damage any of the electrical bits on the bike :nenau

As far as I've read on here and other sites, the BMW socket shuts off after five minutes, unless you have some other tomfoolery plugged in. Might wanna check with BMW themselves to clarify...

Attach the lead directly to the battery, and leave the end in a position where you can get to it easily.... mount the optimate on the wall in the garage ( if you've got one) plug the lead from the optimate into the lead connected to the battery, switch on the power and you're sorted.....

Aux socket certainly turns itself off in a matter of minutes on the 1200's so probably the same with the 800's... so this is the way forward

I've got a mini compressor which I've fitted with the same connector as the optimate so I can use the lead from the battery to power the compressor if I need to do any tyre repairs while out and about :thumb

Lead-acid batteries don't like being stored in any condition short of 100% charged. Sulphation will be occurring all the time that the battery is less than 100%. Although some sulphation is reversable, it best avoided in the first place.

As Bryn suggests, hook up the Optimate lead directly to the battery (if you have a canbus bike) and plug it in at every opportunity. Don't touch it again until you're about to ride off.

Ditch the alarm. They cause nothing but problems and won't stop your bike being nicked.

hi Tim,

I plugged mine straight in, its the BMW one pictures below, i do not know how much they cost as the dealership through it in as I had already added lotts of extras to my bike itrs got the status lights 1/3 2/3 and 3/3 where it holds it for you. you can not overcharge so you leave it on. first time i used it this christmas.
