Batteries, chargers and replacements

Thanks for the advice, BMW dealer was open yesterday so gave them a quick call, they confirmed it is ok to use optimate connected direct to battery not via the dash board power socket.

After taking off the 'tank' cover I attached the lead which came with the charger without disconnecting the battery. Bike now happy and now on a trickle charge. First time in 18 months of ownership I have not used the bike for a week.

How do you attach without disconnecting. With the old optimate I used to have you had to connect the leads to the battery terminals by unscrewing the terminal connectors, putting on the optimate leads, reconnecting the terminals and then plugging in. Have you used the crocodile clip type connectors ?

Hi Dean

you will probably need a third hand but I press ganged the wife into holding the bolt in place on the battery terminal and undone the nut, I then put the lead I had in the optimate box with round connectors on each battery terminal without losing the connection. Hope that makes sense!

When I rang BMW they said if you disconnect the battery you will loose the history for when your bike needs its next service.

I can take a quick photo if needed.

Hi Tim

I think I'm with you now. I haven't even got to the battery on this bike yet !
There were so many warnings in the handbook about charging the battery whilst on the bike wrecking the electric system that it put me off. Its been 3 weeks in the garage at sub zero temps so we'll see if it starts soon.
Thanks for the advice. - The round optimate connectors go directly behind the nut/screw then - without taking the connectors off?

Dean

Hi Dean

yes that sounds right, just keep the bolt going through the battery terminal pressed in tight when removing the nut. No problem with mine, fired up straight away after 10 days of rest.
hope you get it sorted

I fitted this last year to give me an extra, "always on" power supply with the socket wired direct to the battery.
Last weekend I bought this from Heine Gericke and with a £3 DIN plug I can just plug in and leave until the snow clears. :thumb2

I've used Optimate on all my bikes and this one for the past 8 months. Because I'm away alot with work it often has long periods of no use. It has been plugged in now on and off since about November. No problems whatsoever:beerjug::thumb2

Non-starter this morning >:(

:mad::mad::mad::nenau:nenau:nenau

Last rode to work on Tuesday morning, moved it again Wednesday night.

Then went to ride this morning it went, ah-ruh-clunk. Tried another 8 times with the same result.

The dash doesn't show any errors, so I don't think it's anything electrical

There's petrol in the tank, but that doesn't mean it's getting to the injectors

My prognosis is a wet air filter, when it turns it sounds like it's doing 1 turn then giving up, I'm imagining the ECU is giving it a go and instantly going, give up the mix isn't right.

So, has anyone had any similar non-starting problems?

I ended up getting the tube to work and will be calling BMW road-side assistance first thing tomorrow.

Cheers.

So is it turning over and not firing, or not turning over? It's just 'ah-ruh-clunk' is a technical term I've not encountered before.

It turns once and doesn't fire.

Usually when I start it I get a couple of turns and it starts on the 2nd or 3rd turn, but it sounds like it only turns once, then gives up.

Surely if it was the battery it wouldn't tick over at all and the dash would be dead, no?

Will push it to the top of a big hill and try a jump start.

What's the technique?

2nd gear, clutch in, get up some spead, stand up, release clutch and press starter and sit down all at the same time?

No. Si Johnston's did much what yours did after the halogen spots drained the battery. There was enough juice there to light the headlight and instruments but not turn the engine over. Myself and davidgibson999 pushed him down a hill and bingo. Well actually it was Bingo after the third attempt.

As for technique no need to stand up or press the starter. Just get enough speed up in second and release the clutch. It might take 2 or 3 attempts.
