Batteries, chargers and replacements

Yes I turned the ignition on, I'm not that much of a numpty!

I'm just surprised that a battery would drain that quickly, I don't have any aux stuff plugged in, just heated grips and it's not even been that cold the last 2 days.

As for jump starting, it's not something I have to do very often so thought I'd ask :P

it hasn't been cold in the last 2 days but it has been cold in the last 3 weeks and over time without long runs at high revs the battery will steadily suffer from exposure to cold.

At the very least it is worth a punt before you start stripping the bike down.

F800GS Battery problem?

Dear all,

Please can you help me.

I have a F800GS (05/2008), and is has a little problem.

If I begin to start the bike, the display goes blank and the self-control runs again, without starting the engine. It sometimes starts and then self-control runs. It sometimes starts without a problem. I don't know what it is. The battery is only 2 years old, (Exide sn nr: 61 21 7 706 474), and I recharged it, but I still face the same problem.

I bought in Hungary and the mandatory service was done regularly. But I now live in the Netherlands.
The last service were 06. 2009. (Wallis Motor Pest Kft.)

What can I do? Should I buy a new battery?

Thx

i'd start by replacing the battery & see what happens
good luck!!

battery

sounds like the battery is on the way out - replace sooner rather than later

I had a sudden battery failure on a 6 month old bike with 13k km - got nothing on the display - could do nothing but tow to the nearest town & phone the on call guys. Was replaced under warranty tho'

As I understand it when the battery dies everything stops working - you need the battery for the bike to run not only to start it

If the display is going it very much sounds like the battery. My bike is the same age as yours and despite all being well at the moment I am aware that within the next 6 months to a year the battery will have to be replaced.

hy all,

Thanks the many reply.
Today I called to the my hungarian service. They said, that it's seems to be the problem of battery. The battery has 2 years warranty.
The next week I will take service my bike in netherlands.
Thanks for you're help.

New battery

I'm off to Morocco for a whole month in May and will be spending a lot of time off road. I have a Dec-08 F800GS and in recent weeks i've notice my battery struggling when starting. In fact after riding London with my TT fogs on, i could not start the bike after a stall :(

Last time I went to Morocco, I must have stalled my bike 20 times in 20 mins when in the sand. Assuming I can't fix the sand, or my riding ability on sand :augie, then my only choice is a stronger battery. See my problem!

I think the standard BMW battery is 14Ah? Anyone fitted a more powerful 20Ah battery? Any recommendation (must be a sealed battery)?

Anyone know the max output of the alternator?

Rgrds,
Steve

800GS Battery issue - Ithink!!!

I've had my 800GS for about 9 months, took it to Morocco, and been using it happily in the UK normally once a week.
Last Sunday I turned the key and there was nothing, no lights, display and definitely no starting of the engine. The bike hasn't ever seemed to have had any sort of battery issue so I was a little surprised. I took the battery off and hooked it up to my optimate, which hasn't been able to recover it.

Is this common, could I have an underlying cause?

I had a similar issue at about 13k km & 9 months - bike died whilst riding it which was interesting.......

Wife towed me for a while & BMW then recovered it - turns out battery had "died" - evidently not the first they have seen & it is a "known" problem with the OEM battery - it was replaced under warrenty no problem - hopefully with a better battery

Not fun when you are miles away from anywhere with 1 marginal stripe of reception on the mobile

Hi Big Bird,

My battery also went flat, whilst plugged into the BMW optimate/charger (straight into the socket as I left the BMW-zumo also attatched to the bike when the power in the battery dropped charger kicked in and automaticaly turned on the zumo again and again and again until un recoverable blast

Battery was flat as as a flounder so put some life in it with the Halfords charger then keep the BMW optimate/charger pluged in these cold months zumo disconected and it holds it full of life ready to go:thumb2

but I wouldnt mind fitting a heavy duty battery if anyone knows of any let me know please :D

A quick update. Following a couple of days of messing about with the dealership. I called BMW Assist who came out within the hour and put a new battery on free of charge.

RESULT

I had a long converstion today with a gentelman from BMW regarding the batterylife of the F650/800 bikes, he told me that Exide delivered extremely bad quality batteries to BMW, not only to the F series but across the range. If you get a replacement battery from your dealer make sure it is Deka as it is supposed to be if you get another Exide no good.

I have been looking in to larger capacity batteries for these bikes without results.

Cheers Eythor
