Batteries, chargers and replacements

I have a 1200gs and my battery died on me, a common fault apparently. I replaced it with an odyssey gel battery, not cheap but hassle free ever since.

That's the way modern batteries go. One minute fine, the next minute dead. But surely the 800 hasn't been out long enough for any problems. I can understand it on some 1200's (older model). Isn't this covered by warranty? The 800 has only just been out 2 years.
 
This is, as I understand it, a warranty matter. But make sure your battery is replaced with either Deka or Yuasa batteries(insider info from Munich:blagblah) as Excide sent them their cheapest stuff:mad:

I'm feel a little reassured that it is a battery problem rather than something more sinister. As in my earlier update, BMW assist put a new one on free of charge under the warranty. However this happened before all the advice regarding the rubbish Exide. So unfortunately I've got another Exide.
 
Odyssey Battery

The battery on my R1200GS died and was replaced with an Odyssey as an upgrade and has turned out to be money well spent. I'd like to do the same to my F800gs for there are no batteries yet recommended for it. My guess is that the much wider abilities of the Odyssey will mean they fit a larger range of machines so does anyone know what one will fit the 800? Has anyone fitted one yet?

Someone on advrider.com modified the battery compartment to hold one.
 
Battery charging

Hi Chaps,

Can I charge my battery on my 800GS & my 1200RT with this

OPTIMATE 4 12v MOTORCYCLE MOTORBIKE BATTERY CHARGER

by pluging it directly into the BMW OEM power socket with this

OXIMISER OPTIMATE MAXIMISER ACCUMATE ACCESSORY PLUG 72

and how will this effect the canbus. :confused:

I usually charge my 800 through the power outlet, I have to switch on the ignition while I plug it in and turn the ignition off once connected why:confused: I do not know, perhaps one has to open the relay :nenau
 
Yes and no, but mostly no. :blast

You can connect to an accessory socket, but AFAIK you need to 'premium' BMW charger for it to charge the battery if the outlet is connected to the CAN-BUS. If you have a socket which is directly connected to the battery, this is not a problem.
 
I use the BMW one they chucked this in free when i bought my bike :

But :rob just to note I had the zumo on the bike and when the battery demands more power from the charger like they do :blast it automaticly fired up the zumo (draining the battery flat as a flounder) :blast
so remove the zumo = greenlight trickle charging :thumb2

Sorry no, and he seems to have recently had a temper tantrum and withdrawn from society, including deleting 99% of his postings, a lot of which were quite useful. I just tried dredging it out of Google, no joy. His advrider id is JoelWisman, maybe he'd respond to a PM?

No... this is not the case.
I use Optimate 4 and it works fine.
The process is like this:
1. Switch the bike on
2. Start charging.
3. Switch the bike of.
The connection from the socket to the battery will stay open.

There is one thing though Noel.
If you want to use the charger for a long period of time, like during winter storage you might want to go straight to the battery.
Because the "plug thingie" sometimes cuts the current to the battery after the battery is fully loaded, that is when the green light appears on the charger.
I don't know why but but at least on my bike that happens.

Hi Chaps,

I now have my BMW plug with tails to connect to the charger above to enable me to connect my charger directly via the BMW power sockets of both of my bike.
Question ?
Is there a difference in which way the positive and negative leads are connected to the charger.

The only real way to do it via the accessory socket is with the proper BMW (big bucks) charger which contains the necessary electrickery wizardronics to get past the canbus.

I'd agree with Kalli and say connecting it direct to the battery is by fsr the best thing to do - and it's not such a difficult job really... If you want, we can throw in a switched live non-canbus supply too ...:augie
