Batteries, chargers and replacements

I'm feel a little reassured that it is a battery problem rather than something more sinister. As in my earlier update, BMW assist put a new one on free of charge under the warranty. However this happened before all the advice regarding the rubbish Exide. So unfortunately I've got another Exide.

As you can see I had a new exide put on in March. May 14th the day I was due to set off on a European tour...battery was totally dead, not even the dash lit up. I had ridden 300 mile that week so it was being used. Got a green flag chappy over to test the battery, he also checked to see if anything was drawing power, but couldn't find any issues declared it knackered. Totally pissed off.

Made rush to get a replacement, could only get hold of a VARTA. Travelled Europe and it seems to be working fine. I'm now going to kick off with the dealership and try to get a new one for free.

thats good news Rabbit :clap thanks. I have also spoken to N/N and they confirm they have a batch of batteries I beleive to be Oddeysey from the U S of A giving 3 times the cold crank over the standard. I have signed up to be a tester aparantly its just the terminal fitting they are not sure of (althogh state is intended for the F650GS/F800GS). was offered as you mentioned discounted rate = same as bmw standard cost.(ariving friday)

I will post here on the out come!

Just to confirm this battery is taller than the original and will not fit, although it shoe horns in the battery well of the F650 GS, it sits too tall so will be returned to Nippy Normans :eek

A bit of an update on this. The Varta worked great on my Euro trip, and subsequently, but I've just returned from a 2 week holiday (the battery was fully charged before going) and this battery is now dead.

Battery drain

Ive read through all this thread and it seems that my problem is quite common i.e. battery died after riding the bike all week (touring in Dorset etc) so new battery fitted and all ok - till this Sunday when it struggled to start. Battery is less than 2 months old. So the question is (at last) what is draining the battery (no alarms, extra lights, gps, autocom or playstation fitted) and what is the best method to do this. aaaannnnndddd due to the drain? I have fitted a couple of leads direct to battery so I can connect an OptimateIII and noticed a couple of posts mention that it shoud be fused, Is that right or wrong?
Heading to Anglesey for a week soon and if I cant find the drain I will have to take a charger due to lack of confidence.
Cheers in advance
MotoCroz (08 F650GS)

Specs look quite similar to the those of the Shorai LiFePO4 range, bar it being twice the price...

Just in case i'm talking rubbish have been steered away from the Shorai for some reason?

Has anybody tried a SUPER B lithium battery in a F800GS. Very expensive but if it works fine.My standard one is very tired after only 6500 miles.

I must be lucky and have a good battery!
I've done over 30,000 mile on myMarch '09 F800GS, on the original battery, most of it with Aux lights on all the time and had no problems with battery drain or even a hint of it refusing to start :aidan
