Battery Charging through Power Socket

Or i would do - charge the battery directly - if i could get the front seat off - I am now frightened of either breaking the key or the seat.

I was in Mill yesterday to get a BMW charger for my 12GS.

I explicitly told the parts guy the bike model and he gave me a charger with a model number 71.60.7.676.472, I was not convinced that was the right charger and asked the guy to check, it turned out that this charger is listed for use on just about every BM EXCEPT the 12GS, even the parts guy was surprised. After a bit of digging he came up with the charger no 71.60.7.688.864 which is the listed charger for the 12GS and is the one you (Happy Grandad) have quoted. I now have one on order and should have it by wednesday. Ill let you know what happens.
I have no idea what may be happening with your bike, Happy G, other than it does look like you could have a knackered battery, even though as you say you think you would have noticed a problem with it before now if this was the case. It would be worth borrowing a known good optimate from someone to check your battery out ? You should disconnect the battery from the bike before charging it. My optimate II seems to work fine on mine used this way.

By the way David - S , I think the numbers you quote must only be current in the US as my UK dealers computer system had not heard of them.

Thats very possible. If they made them the same across the board some poor sap that has the job of assigning different numbers may have to get a job working for a living! Glad you got it worked out. Out of curiosity how much in you currency is the charger? We seem to get hosed on some parts over here.

Most bike battery chargers (low current) will charge the AGM battery of the 1200, but you must disconnect the bike from it. The reason is that some chargers can push out as much as 22 volts in de-sulphating mode, BMW's charger (71 60 7 688 864) has a max of 15.5 volts, anything higher and you will kill the bikes electronics.

Happy Grandad - Try pushing the seat down firmly where the retaining pin/catch is (near the rear of the front seat) before trying to turn the key to release the seat. I find this helps. The cause of the seat beng difficult to remove can sometimes be the tools/repair kit etc. in the tray sticking up too far and jamming against the underside of the seat.

David_S, BMW want 65 of our pounds for a battery charger for the 12 GS. Daylight robbery, but what choice do we have given the sensitivity of the can bus electronics to overvoltage?!

..........and if anyone can give us a part number for it too, it would help us get the right one!

Cheers
:D

I promised an update on my earlier problems with the new battery charger. It appears that .............

1. The BMW Dealers' battery chargers are different from the ones we can buy. Theirs will charge any BMW battery, but cost around twice as much as the ones we get.

2. My problem, which was similar to Happy Grandad's, was that the charger stayed in de-sulphinating mode for 12+ hours. And then seemed to go straight to the maintenance mode (HGrandad's charger ended up showing the error light whereas my didn't). Even having been fully charged, the battery still seemed to get locked into the desulphinating mode. After research & discussions with BMW, it appeared that either "1) the charger is knacked, or 2) the battery is knacked, or 3) the bike (electronics) is knacked" (see earlier posts).

3. My dealer reloaded the bike software, which took some time. Incidentally, this has completely cured the '2500rpm lurch' which has been mentioned on a different thread. The dealer then replaced the battery, and charged it using my charger - which worked perfectly. I have subsequently stuck the bike on charge through the aux socket and (so far) the system seems to work perfectly, the green 3/3 maintenance mode coming up in around 45 minutes. It seems, therefore, that the problem lay with my original battery. However, the software reload updated the bike charging map, so it is possible that the battery problem may have been caused by the original charging map in the bike; there's no way of telling.

Happy Grandad - get your dealer to reload your bike software completely, and get them to replace your battery with a new one.

4. The service engineer tells me that, if you disconnect the battery (say, to recharge using an Optimate) then, once reconnected, open and close the throttle fully twice (ignition on, engine off, obviously). This helps the management system 'recalibrate itself', or something like that.

hello,

i have an optimate charger/conditoner for the car, will this do for the 1200gs?

thanks.

I have done as you said. I had 2 chargers do the same thing so I had Rainbow do the software update and then attempt to charge the battery through the power socket. It did the same thing as before. They then charged ithe battery directly and the battery took the charge. They are flumoxed as to why it will not charge so they are going to get back to BMW to see what/if there is anything that can be done

Rainbow have now set up my Airflow charger so that it will charge the battery directly. Grateful thanks once again to them.

Feckin ell! I'm happy I didn't get the 12.

Just bought the hugely expensive 'gel' type charger from Mr BMW for 65 quid for my adventure. Does the job, no issues.

which, amazingly, is exactly the cost of the 1200 charger, also from Mr BMW! What the charger has done is identify 2 batteries which, whilst having seemed to perform ok, were actually knackered. Can't be bad.
