My 2017 GSA stutters occasionally on starting (despite living on an Optimate) so methinks it's time for a new battery. Will de-energizing the bike in this way cause any problems with on-board settings? Or am I just being a chicken? My old Guzzis never suffered in this way, nor my XR 1000. I would say it's the only real downside with the big twins.

best wishes to all for 2004.

Hang about, what happened to those twenty years?

day

Seems like you bought a bike 13 in the future.

If you do it on a Monday, the world will collapse and a black hole will swallow everything in a 5 mile radius from your bike

Just discconect it, if any settings are lost, ( they shouldnt be apart from the clock) just program them back in, its no biggy

Assuming you have not replaced the battery since purchasing the bike (in 2004/2017 delete as appropriate) then you should think about replacing it - they are a consumable.
Static voltage (Not everything I know, but its an indicator) should be better than 12.2.
Get the battery out and checked at your local garage with a battery condition checker - this should take about 3 mins and give a printout of % performance.

Depending on how long the bike is without a battery (and the phase of the moon) in addition to the clock needing to be reset the ECU may forget the current date. This will result in the "SERVICE" indication. You need a GS-911 or the Motoscan app to set the date.

Thanks everybody. I shall take the plunge. And I did not think it was that stupid a question.

I've disconnected the battery on all my recent BMWs to fit my hexezecan and have never had any problems with the clock etc, so if you're just disconnecting the power for a few minutes to swap the battery out you should be fine

That's interesting, on the RT 2014 to 2023, if you disconnect the battery, you can set the time and date through the menu on the bike, this then will extinguish the service reminder.

Pretty standard selection of responses from fellow Tossers so far. One third utterly pointless and critical, one third utterly pointless but amusing and one third either vaguely or very close to being helpful. For a forum, it's pretty good! But when someone does get it right, it's VERY right.

Swapped my original battery (2018 with TFT) on my GS for a Motobatt last spring. One out, one in. The bike was sans-battery for 3-5 mins max.
No issues, nothing to reset, no further action needed 👍
