Hi,

Recently bought a 2005 1200 RT .. I work overseas and come home every 4 weeks so the bike is not getting a lot of use. I have an optimate 4 charger which I use to charge the battery but dont like to leave it on when Im not home. The battery is flat every time i come back ... not sure how old it is but figure I will replace it ... Does anyone have any recommendations on new batteries or should I just replace it with the same one that is in it ?

Do you leave it with the alarm on? I have just bought an 09 one and think that is draining mine.

On my previous 1st (05), I fitted an odyssey. However, others are now doing similar batteries so there is better choice.

Have a look on Tayna batteries web site to see some options.

If you have a TomTom GPS mount, these are notorious for flattening batteries...

FWIW, i would leave the Optimate on whilst you are away. That is what they are designed to do. I have quite a few on bikes and boat batteries with no problems at all, and nice healthy batteries...

When you say Tom Tom GPS mounts, are you meaning if the GPS is left on it.
I've wired mine direct to the battery, no GPS on the mount, will this still drain the battery?
Reason I ask it's at the airport and I'm due home tomorrow been left for three weeks.
Never had an issue before but I've just swapped to the Tom Tom.... Oh shit!!

Have the same issue with my 06 RT and it happened before I fitted the sat nav cradle so can't blame it and there's nothing else aftermarket fitted. I replaced the battery but still had the same problem so I just disconnect the battery now. I will be watching this thread in the hope of someone knowing what the fix is

Thanks for your reply but there is no alarm fitted or any other after market device. It did have an old autocom system but I removed it.

Lets hope you left it parked on first floor or higher, they're a buggar to bump start, actually I think they're impossible to bump, may need to jump if no juice for the f.i./ignition.

Your absolutely right ... by far the easiest solution but Im getting the bike shipped to Germany by overlanders next month and I dont want to arrive to pick up a bike with a flat battery.

Thanks for the info on the optimate ... wasnt sure if it was safe to leave on for long periods of time .... i have it for the last 5 yrs and used on a GS i had previously.

I'm on the border so easy to Belfast / Dublin .... Halfords sell Yuasa batteries .. anyone know if they are worth buying?

There is definitely something wrong with the bike.

I have an identical bike, same year.
I park it up when there is salt on the roads, and have never put a charger on it.
3 months later, just hit the starter button and away it goes. A bit reluctant to get over the first cylinder, but once it does so, it starts.
It came with a BMW keyfob and an alarm button on it, but in my 8 years of ownership, I have never tried to activate this alarm.

Hi

No just the mount with no GPS. I had issues with my battery flattening and I refused to believe it was the mount (GPS removed) until I put an ammeter on it and watched the current draw.

I connected my Motobatt to an Oxford Oximiser over winter, flat as a fluke when I came to start it.
So if it's a Motobatt it may not do it any good.

Oh dear.. I'm guessing flat batt when I get back!
How would I stop this?

Slightly off topic here but.... I realise you are from Ireland, but did you really mean to choose Username as your user name :D
