Has anybody got any opinions or experience of Dynavolt batteries for the 1150gs. I am looking at some on geebay which are reasonably priced with freepost from Germany. I have had an Oddessy for the last couple of years, I don't get to use the bike every day but for the last couple of years it seems that everytime I need to use it I have to charge it.

A new battery won't cure the problem if there is a drain somewhare. If it's possible disconnect one side of battery till next use and see if it starts when required. Of course you could use some kind of charger/conditioner. JJH

I've a motobat on my 1150 and even while it was left for 10 weeks in Spain unused it still started first time when I returned. Where are you based ?

On the 1150 the LCD clock is always on IIRC and was the only drain on an unmolested bike - the Odyssey battery I fitted to my 1150 in 2004 was still going strong in 2011 when I sold the bike. When I was storing the bike at my mum's house the bike would start after being left for 2 months, if the battery was fully charged.

Perhaps you are not riding the bike far enough and often enough to charge the battery to full capacity? No battery will give you better performance in this situation and that's why Optimates etc are used by many light users.

It wasn't as much of an issue during the warmer weather it's now when the temperatures drop that its a problem. I charged it up last Saturday but it went flat before she started. I had similar problems the last few winters so I really need a new one. I have heard about the motobatt alright but the dynavolt is coming a bit cheaper and it has higher cranking power. (I,m in Carlow)

I agree the bike is not getting enough going but any time that I get out on it it is usually a decent spin and it seems to be charging ok. I have an alarm on it,and driving lights which are on all the time as well so I know the battery is getting lots of use but I was expecting a little more from the Oddessy for the price. :nenau

The alarm will leave any battery low after a while. IIRC Odyssey trade amp hour capacity to get more cold cranking amps, so it may suffer sooner. Another thought is that if the starter is getting tired it'll give the battery a hard time.

I think you had unrealistic expectations - I don't know the make of your alarm but any battery would be drained in the same way. The cost of the Odyssey is in the technology that delivers more cold cranking amps and does not discharge with *no load* like conventional, wet batteries do over time. Apply a load such as an alarm to any battery and it is going to go flat - they Odyssey doesn't store many more electrons, it is able to deliver them quicker and won't go flat if left in a box on a shelf.

Need a new battery for my R850R any recomendations for replacement?

The odyssey pc680 you have can be reconditioned. Are you handy with a dvm?

Gel batteries have the highest self discharge of any lead acid batteries, they also sulphate up quicker if left discharged. AGM are best in this respect followed by the conventional wet acid batteries.
No battery will last long if left discharged for any length of time, due to sulphation they will loose capacity, then even if you charge them "fully" you will have greatly reduced capacity, hence the "going flat before starting"
A sulphated battery also has increased internal resistance that reduces the maximum amount of current it can deliver.
My preference is for AGM technology but any battery KEPT charged should give good service.

Had an oddyssey in mind tbh

I used a couple of Odyssey batteries and found the good, am using a motobatt AGM one at the moment. Fits the GSA well and easier to fit than the PC680 cheaper too when I bough it but the two batteries are about the same price now, around£77. So far its performing well.

Beware misleading description. AGM batteries are not gel batteries as many sellers are describing them.

My Varta was on the bike before i baught my beemer. I had the bike for 4 years so i really do not know how old it is
