Battery Recommendations

I've just taken an oddyey battery off mu bike. Only had the bike six months but the bike is an 02 and had the original lead acid battery replaced at some time - don't know when. When it got cold the bike would not turn over. Fitted over the positive terminal was half an orange rubber ball (kwik cricket I believe) to insulate it from the tank.

I took Steptoe's advice and replaced it with a BMW gel bat.

Half rubber ball available....

My battery was sluggish over a couple of winters. Last year on the odd occasion the motor would come to a halt amid cranking but would then start so I ordered an Odyssey thinking the original (lead acid) was on the way out. Whilst waiting for the new one to arrive I was out one day, went back to the bike after left standing for an hour or so and it wouldn't start, just a click and loss of lights. I checked the battery to find that the positive terminal was very slightly loose, tightend up, everything fine again. I then thought that I didn't really need a new battery but as it was coming to me at £62 and that my original one was 6 years old I thought I might as well put the new one in.
This week at work I was tidying under my bench and was about to ditch my old battery which had sat there for a year when, just for a matter of interest I decided to put a multi-meter across the terminals and was suprised to see a reading of 11.98v, not bad for a battery that has never been charged in any way other than from the bikes own altenator.

Well I bought OE from Motorworks and use a Ctek charger - it's been fine this winter. I've read plenty from others who use Optimates with both OE and Odyssey batteries. The only thing I've heard about optimates being a problem is when using them on 1200's with their canbus electrics.

If I was you, I'd get an OE gel battery and continue to use the Optimate f you think it needs it, no doubt others will chip in

Sometimes my Optimate gives me the RED light . So far , touch wood , it hasn't been the battery but the contacts on the optimate being slightly corroded . A quick squirt of contact cleaner and a scrape with a little screwdriver does the trick.
Cheers . Frontbrake
