2008 1200ADV
Original battery shot , ordered new one from BMW ( by frame no. ) battery arrived but is 40mm shorter , took it back and got one same physical size but is 12 AH not 14 . What batteries are people using as replacements and does anyone know what the correct part no. is as BMW seem not to know !

Do a search fella. Bags of advice for the finding.

Very few, however, seem to recommend to go back to BMW for a replacement. The batteries they offer do not always seem last long....and BMW is probably not particularly cheap either.

I bought a Hawker Odyssey from Nippy Norman 5 years back and its still going strong.
 
I asked a similar question a couple of weeks back after my heated grips kept turning themselves off.
I replaced my original battery with a Motobat after a recommend on here and so far it has resolved the issue.

Bought off mad4bikes on EBay a smidgen under £50.

And the search facility on here can be a ball ache...so I find it just as easy to answer the question if I can.
 
Decide how much money you want to spend. Top end you can get an ultra light weight Ballistic that will happily start the bike for 10 years, sit unused for months without damage and never need an Optimate. Bottom end a cheap from China that will be shot in 2 years and needs Optimate every time bike is parked. Total running cost about the same. Posh Lead acid (e.g. Odyssey) is between the two on costs but VERY heavy.

If you use an alarm and leave the bike for long periods the Ballistic will need a special charger. But then so does lead acid. It depends what kit you already have in the shed.
 
Motobatt....£50 ish and great starting power. Much better value than everything else out there in my opinion.
 
That's what I paid for my Odyssey used nearly new. TBH, if I was considering full price new Odyssey I'd have to seriously look at adding a bit more and going to a Ballistic.
 
I have a 2011 1200ADV TC here, does anyone know what the best website to get a Odyssey battery for my 2011
 
I would pay £140 for something at 1/4 weight & size with no sulphate problems, minimal self discharge and no acid to spill.
But paying 2x the price of a MotoBatt which does the same job? Why?
 
GSA booked in for MOT last Saturday (11th). Used it for commute to work on Thursday 9th for shakedown run prior to. Bit sluggish to start which I put down to running the GS 911 on it to check for faults the evening before as the ign (word check changed that to gin!) was on for a while...
Sat morning, nothing. Jumped it and got it going but lights going on and off and generally misbehaving. Took it off and charged it but again nothing. Volts at 13.8-12.8 after a rest. Sticker on the side said 2009. Remembered it was changed under warranty for sluggish starting when I bought it new, so its not done too bad…

Not going to pay BuMW prices and can't really justify an Odyssey so going for a Yuasa YTX14H-BS which has slightly better cranking output than a standard YTX14-BS. There were cheaper ones but The Battery Shop were doing them for £60 so I'm going for it. Same dimensions as the original.

Should be delivered today. Will report after running it for a bit.

loads and loads of battery options available. You pays yr money and takes yr choice.

I replaced the OEM battery in my 2010 TC GS with a Motobatt.
No idea what the correct BMW part number is.
 
Go cheap n cheerful (or newish used) to do the job or go full bollox Hi Tech with a Ballistic and get a small lightweight pack that lasts 10 years. Snag is you'll want to swap it to the next bike so one way or another, you'll still be buying a lead acid at some time.
 
I looked at a Ballistic but decided against as I ride all year round and they do not perform as well when the temp drops to around zero - didn't fancy bumping it at those temps.
 
I had an Odyssey on my 04 bike, it was good.

I have a Motobatt on my current 08 bike and it's just as good, but half the price.
 
Just fitted an odessey from Nippy Normans to mine, cranks the bike over at a fair rate, very happy.
