bbpower chip and power commander - issues?

Hi there.

I've recently acquired a GS which has a bbpower chip fitted.

I've also got a power commander which I plan on fitting and getting mapped.

Will the PC make the chip redundant, so should be replaced with the OEM chip if fitted? Perhaps there might be some "confusion" if they're both installed?

Or will they happily work in tandem, as the PC doesn't care what chip is fitted, it just alters the fuel/air ratio regardless?

Thanks.

I don't have the answer to your question but I would suggest you go onto the bbpower website and send them an email asking for their advice. :thumb

I think I would be inclined to return the original chip if you still have it.

Then - the PC is only altering from standard.

(it might make no difference at all - but it would be good practice)

Dynojet used my bike as a testbed for the PC, when it was first available. If you do a search on my user name, I'm sure you'll find all the stuff I wrote about it at the time...

I'd already had a Superchip fitted, which is similar to the BB version, I believe, in that it is a "learning" chip & can adapt to changes in the fuelling system such as fitting a K&N or different exhaust. This caused a problem with the testing as the chip overrode the fuelling map on the PC. We had to refit the standard chip for the PC to start to work...

HTH,

OK, Mr Bernhard Bludau himself has said the bbpower chip and a PC are incompatible. I'd like to understand further (I really can't see why a PC should be concerned about what's on the EFI chip - be it an OEM or a modded one) but will take his word for it.

Can anyone help explain what else I may need to do except swap out the chip? Am I right in saying there's possibly something I need to do with a "CCP" or a "Motronic" also? There might be some jumpers that I need to change / remove?

I do apologise for my numptiness - I'm a bit new to all this lark.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

You won't need to do anything with CCP's or Motronic resets except, I'd suggest paying for some dyno time & get the PC set up correctly for you. It comes with several fuelling maps for differing set ups, ie: with/without Cat, with Standard/K&N type air filter or with exhaust mods. However, Dynojet gave me several bespoke maps, too, as they had seen my TT video & reckoned they could improve stuff like power & throttle response. It worked...:thumb:D A 10% increase in power at 40% throttle opening.

Ah, that's your TT stuff on YouTube is it?

Sorry, when I refer to possibly needing to tweak some things I thinking about what may have been done when the bbpower chip was put in. If I decide to go back to the OEM chip then I'll need to reverse those changes.

Apparenty I need 30 and 87a, which is the gold CCP. Or something. I'm still trying to work it out.

Anyhow, of course you're right about getting a custom map built. That's the whole reason for getting it. I don't want a map that's supposedly right - I want one that is right. Still, interesting to hear that yours came with a few maps on it. I can't seem to find any on the UK site, and the ones on the US site are polar opposites - fully stock or flowed heads, pistons and cams etc.

Getting a base dyno run done tomorrow, and will fit the PC after that. I'm hoping the dyno operator will understand the wideband lambda sensor as most PC's don't have one.

What did they try to map your A/F ratio to, 13.2:1 ?

Thanks.

You don' t need to bother with a CCP. Just leave the slot empty - your PC will deal with it. All the CCP did was instruct the Std chip to run different base maps to deal with fuel quality variations, etc.

13.2:1 was the target, but they set mine up a bit richer in the mid-range, for better throttle response when overtaking. When you've got yours set up, post the map on here & we can compare settings & graphs...

Right, the PC arrived today so just to be sure here's a snap of the electronic stuff. There seems to be a yellow plug in the top left, and a jumper in pins 5 and 6 of what I think is the Motronic socket. They may also be known as pins 87a and 30.

According to the bbpower chip instructions this is for a setup "without cat, open endmuffler, Remus" which is exactly what I've got.

However, once the bbpower chip is replaced with the OEM chip, how should I set the Motronic up then? Thoughts welcome.

I did a search, and found someone else had already answered this...

"it codes the engine for running with a can, and without a cat, its the stage 3 setting for a BB chip, but does the same thing without the chip"

So therefore I can replace the bbpower with the OEM chip and leave the motronic as it is.

Time to fit that PC :)
