Hi all

Recently started experiencing a graunchy vibrating clutch on my F800GS (2008, 39000 miles).

To investigate I removed the clutch cover, clutch, 32mm retaining nut etc to reveal the bearing that sits behind the nut was damaged.

Some of the bearing case had clearly dismantled itself with the ball bearings slopping about leading to visible lateral movement in the shaft hence the knocking sound and vibration in the lever.

There were small metal parts in the sump from the bearing case. Clearly a very bad situation. I suspect it’s the same problem experienced in this YouTube video:

What would you advise I do next? Is it an engine out job to fix? Would it be worth it?

The sad part is everything else about the bike is lovely and in great order - smooth gears, no smoke, plenty of power, starts on the button and no GS 911 faults.

Always really appreciate the help, advice and moral support of the lovely folk on this fab forum. Thank you.

Hi again

It’s the bearing marked C in this photo from the Haynes.

Following also, as i have an odd rythmic noise that I think is eventuating from the clutch area...

Recently purchased a new bike so looking to sell this as spares/repair for someone who has time for a project.

Happy to listen to reasonable offers. Other than the bearing failure outlined above the bike is in very good condition, all original and has relatively new tyres, chain/sprockets etc.

With the bearing replaced bike would be lovely - smooth gears, no smoke, plenty of power, starts on the button and no GS 911 faults.

Buyer would need to collect from Kent.

I would contact Ted ( Motorevieve on here). He’s worked on lots of these twins and may be able to offer advice as to how easy / likely cost to repair. In terms of selling if its not too expensive to fix , you would certainly get a lot more for a straight bike with no issues than a bike needing unknown work.

See link to one of Teds posts
