Beeline for foreign places

Anyone using their Beeline for when in foreign places?

I want a back up for the Montana 700 mounted on my Basic and I already have the Beeline fitted. Saves faffing with a phone mount, and could be handy for the last few km to our digs,
 
We used a Beeline in Sardinia a few years ago. It was hilarious. The routes were on a phone and the beeline sort of followed them. I don’t think the fact it was in Sardinia had any bearing on the device.
 
Just as a reminder, the original Beeline and the Beeline Moto II are pretty well chalk and cheese. The former …..erm …. not for me, but the Moto II is great and I’ve used it in France, Germany, Ireland and all over the UK without any hitches. Beeline say it has world wide GPS coverage. Do I have any gripes with it? If you create a route in Beeline, it will auto re-route, whereas if you import a route then it won’t. For me that’s a pain as I prefer MyRouteApp for route creation.
 
As a backup device, why not? Just make sure you know how to use it before any trip. Most times when a satnav is blamed for being useless, the root cause is simply down to the user not getting to grips with the device in the weeks and months before a trip.

I use a Garmin too but it is old. I have a phone that could be used as a back-up. I can also use the rubbish integrated thing on the Moto Guzzi via phone app. I can read a map and road signs. None are ideal compared to the Garmin but at least there is a good chance I will find my hotel, the return ferry and get home if the Garmin dies.

Plan route on phone linking up points you deem worth seeing.

I did a few tests and it finds all my hotels easily enough, so I think it will do fine.

I used my Beeline yesterday to follow a made up route in the Border country and it was excellent, again. Very easy to follow and the only error was me not paying attention.
Today I plan to go abroad with it, albeit briefly, when I cross into England. I’m trusting it to get me back over the line shortly after that. I’ve updated international maps.

Yes. I used it in Spain, France, Switzerland, and Italy.
Very useful for B&B to restaurants in the evening without having to lug around the XT.

Works as intended.
I'm always very happy with it. Great little bit of hardware/software.

OpenStreet mapping, so good worldwide.
The good thing is that you can search by location name, so you don't have to input complex addresses.

The only negative point is mobile phone reception, of course. But that comes with all those devices.

I think the Beeline works best in open country.

I used it from time to time in central London (not, I admit, somewhere where some people go too often) and it struggled. The signal is sometimes lost or it cannot cope with lots of streets being thrown at it quite fast. Here, a dedicated GPS device or just a phone running Google maps is much better.

That would be mostly your phone, Richard.

The Beeline is (almost) merely a "repeater" screen of the navigation data that the app calculates and outputs.
I bought the Beeline specifically to use it when in the city (so not to have to take the larger XT with me). I found that it works very well.

I have disconnections in some crowded areas between the iPhone and the Beeline, not GPS/navigation drops, but that is known issue I have with my iPhone 13 where in crowded areas Bluetooth connection is unreliable. Having phone conversations using my Airpods is a nightmare, as they disconnect every few seconds during the call, but this is an Apple-side problem, not Beeline.

Long story short: try using the Beeline with another phone while in the city (if I remember well, you use a dedicated device to pair with gizmos) and you most probably will have a better result. If it's slow, it's the phone connected to it being slow.

My main units are the 276cX with the Montana 710 so making 'beelines' to my favourite apiculturalists on yearly visits to load up on their golden nectar.

Currently testing the handheld H1 but it has issues so I'm keeping Garmin busy!

It’s a big fast iPhone 15.

The problem was on a motorcycle at Sloane Square and the streets around there. Maybe it was just me, but I didn’t find the instructions very clear and / or it kept on updating very badly. The latter though, I agree was very probably the phone itself. That said, for a simple device, on main roads and out in the country, it worked well.
