It's the speed appropriate to the road that counts......we could all probably name hump backed bridges on 60MPH NSL roads that you'd be a twat to ride over at 60mph or bends on country roads that, legally, you could do at the national speed limit, but you'd be an utter cnut to do so on.... and if you ride around ANY corner faster than you can see to stop in, you deserve everything you get

if (worst case scenario here) there were a couple of kids playing or wandering across the road there, even out in the country........what would the story be now?




Glad you made it out alive, but sorry, you were evidently riding too fast for the road conditions/what you could see, there's no 'maybe' about it..... you were in the wrong.

windy....no beef at all with anyone, it just annoys me when people point fingers like they have never made a mistake or exceeded the speed limit, or whatever and then end with "Just calling it like I see it"
it reminds me of the same type of people starting sentences with , “don’t take offense, but.......”

Don't know why you are all getting worked up about this. MaxC will probably never make that mistake again. I'm worried about Yonkyo who has had several similar incidents. Glasses and some advanced training?

It is fully sorted and back on the road! I found someone selling a load of GSA parts on Gumtree - it was a very low mileage 09 bike that had been stolen and partly stripped so I had the fork legs, lower yoke and wheels, plus a complete set of body panels for reasonable money. I bought a top yoke from eBay and put it together with new bearings.

My mistake (?) was buying a top yoke from an 07 bike - very cheap but the bars were way too low and would foul the winglets so I made a set of risers to take my 09 mounts. They put the bars 40mm up and 25mm back - the perfect position for me. I will probably make a bettter set when I have time but they are fine for now and only cost me £5 for the aluminium.

The total cost of the repairs was £1050. I now have some extra peices to sell off - complete body panels (Magnesium grey) and a couple of other things I will stick on this site. It was easy to work on and I would recommend a repair like this to anyone.

Can't wait for the end of next month when I am off for 2 weeks. No plans so I'll look at the forecast and decide which direction to head. 3 weeks after that I'm having 2 weeks in the Pyrenese with a couple of mates, one on a GS and one on a an Aprillia enduro. I have a set of Mitas 07 tyres fitted to the spare wheels so will fit them for the trips and do a bit of exploring.

Windychuffer - whatever beef there was was being shared betwix Fanum and OP, don't think you were invited to that particular BBQ.
It kills me that someone comes on here with a tale of woe, an admission of some responsibility and then the march of the self-righteous begins - I am pretty sure that we have all done some unwise things but I suggest that road safety lectures will, in this case, be a distant second to the actual accident in the learning a lesson 'steaks' (see what I did there?)

And if he was to blame Fanum, I would think the 3rd party insurers would have had a go.....

Wasn't trying to be self-righteous buddy......just when someone has an accident, most people blindly react with all the sympathy and condolences even though the guy who had it in this case admitted that he was at fault

Yes I'm prone to pointing out the other side of a lot of things, especially when they seem to be ignored yet pretty obvious, but what's wrong with that?

I said I could have gone slower - but certainly didn't admit fault as I was within the speed limit for the road. You cannot be prepared for the unexpected - like an idiot pulling out in front of you as happened to me. End of discussion.

It was great to be back on the bike at the weekend. I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday and Sunday as a guest of one of the F1 teams so it was great to cut through the traffic. The queues were around 2.5 hours going in! there was a 1200GSA on display with an adventure trip company, plus an 800 on the Metal Mule stand. There was also a racer there on an 80's R100 who really put on a good show with the best wheelies of the weekend - very impressive!

I noted comments about provenace of parts and it is a major issue. I'm happy about all the parts I bought, but wonder about the eBay ads for GSA bits from Lithuania. If you look at the items all the components are there except the identifiable ones and nothing is damaged....

That's the whole bloody point though - you *can* be prepared for the unexpected. And no, that doesn't mean riding everywhere at 25mph (or some other absurdly low speed). But TBH, a vehicle pulling out of a lay-by is hardly "unexpected" anyway -it's what folks generally do after they've been parked in one for a little while.
