Any recommendations for my lad

I was thinking 16gb Ipad2, with WIFI

John Lewis are about £320, any better suppliers or recommendations?

that's what angi has and she's very happy with it.

retina screen models are nicer, but not a deal breaker IMO if cost is an issue.

wi-fi models do not have a proper gps receiver if that is important.

if he's going to be carrying it about, consider the ipad mini.

try the apple refurb store online. some decent savings. or if he's in some kind of education apple will offer a discount.

new models coming soon. maybe next month. smaller bodied ipad and aluminium body for the mini. maybe retina mini?

for me, a retina mini would probably be the pick of the bunch, if they ever make one.

The more memory the better, I loaded a lot of photographs, on mine, and now can't even upgrade to version 7 as I don't have enough memory.

:blast

memory is very dependent on personal requirements. angi's 16GB is quite enough for her. my ipad is 32GB and i've never felt the need for more, though it is pretty full.

BTW it takes less memory to upgrade if it is done wired via itunes and not OTA.

OTA being Over The Air ie. via Upgrade in Settings on the ipad.

and forget 3g - just personal hotspot it to your phone. They say in the shops that you cant do it (they have to say that) but you can and its very good.
i can get 4 mb through hotspotting.

If you get wifi only you can get a Bluetooth GPS receiver to keep in the car ...it connects automatically and you get a good sat nav as well.

depends on your particular contract or a jailbreak of the phone would be needed.

Like I say, it depends on the contract.

I can't just turn on the hotspot on mine, it's not an option. I think I'd have to switch contracts.

Which one depends very much on what you are using it for. Have both ipad and ipad mini; both are 16GB and never had any problem with memory but don't tend to store much on them (use icloud) - for work and carrying around much prefer the mini, even fits in a suit pocket- £269 from the Apple store with free engraving.

You can but so far, my research suggests that the only one that works with Apple devices is the Dual Bluetooth GPS - http://gps.dualav.com/explore-by-product/xgps150a/

I'm currently balking at paying £80 for one of these.....

It can be done

I'm with O2 Simplicity, had to negotiate my contract to get the wifi hotspot feature enabled on my iPhone 4, cost me another £2 a month. It works very well with my iPad2.
