Hi looking to buy a puncture repair kit to carry round on the bike, what's the best one to get ?
I do have a small compressor already .

Agree with bobsnew, 'stop and go'. I have over the years used ragtails. For me stop and go, offer a better fix. One note of advise, you say you have a small compressor, how small ? Size of a paperbook. These tend to overheat after running for a couple of minutes, this I know from experiance.

I need to replace my puncture repair kit after the episode at the GS meetup with Simon from Ride Magazine! I got a glass splinter through the centre line tread on a nearly new PR4. I repaired it with my usual £4.99 kit and had a slow leak. But, it did get me to the photo shoot albeit with a slow leak still going. Then the fun started (in the rain)...We all tried various sizes, different types of kit to plug the hole and none were succesful. I think each time we tried a different plug, we enlarged the hole too much or the glass sliced it sideways so it was never fixable. I ended up getting BMW recovery and adding a massive adventure story to my bike history! Moral: I think I learned that in some cases, it doesn't matter what kit you have, if the hole is too big etc nothing will plug it. Not even the expensive http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/STOP-n-GO...112785?hash=item56824a92d1:g:izkAAOSwG-1WvjdO
And they are heavy/big to lug around. I am now ordering one of these at £9...http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Stop-n-Go...hash=item5d5b27c2d3:m:mBhHhe4PNk-woFjDv3_G05Q

I carry the stop and go pocket kit for nails/screws and a cheap set of tails in case of a split. None of this takes up much room but I have a side mounted tool box opposite side to the exhaust.

Will be bringing a few of these home from my next usa visit . ( if you can wait a few weeks?) $64.95 plus postage ... I'll advise when i have them.

There isn't a best one ?

I use Stop N Go, plus some rat's tails & tool etc & also carry the BMW one

In my experience you need

Rat's tails
Mushrooms
Rema Top Tip ovals

All punctures are different and sometimes you need to have all 3 types

puncture kit

Or just stand there whilst someone else does the repair.:hide

I use rats tails, I have even put 2 along side each other in a split, the important thing is to push them in and twist the tool, then there is a larger bit inside the tire, then get a pair of pliers and pull the string to get it tight, takes prob 30 seconds, blow up tire and test with bottle of water, if it bubbles give the tail another pull with pliers till bubbles stop. Could not be easier... Or cheaper, I have used stop and goes but also had them leak so replaced them with rat tails, so now I just use rat tails.

adventuredon, I'm just curious......if you have a bike under warranty...then call BMW recovery for a puncture repair / help..... Does this turn out to be a really expensive way of getting back on the road ?

As with all motorbike accessories there are numerous options and we all tend to recommend the brand/type which we last used with greatest success. As most of us have not experienced fixing a puncture at the roadside (and many breakdown services will carry out the repair so we may not gain the experience) we are obliged to make a choice and keep our fingers crossed - firstly that we don't need to use the kit, and secondly that if we do, it works.

Perhaps the solution is to carry a repair kit but also to install that sticky stuff which goes into the tyre and seals small punctures as they occur

This is perhaps a belt and braces option but biking pals of mine report many, many thousands of trouble free miles with this approach

Wrong lad, filling tyre with repair solution will not allow plug types to seal underside of tyre. Have repaired punctures on motor ways in Europe several times saving time and money to get conveyed off it. Agree with not all punctures are the same. Pay yer money and take your choice. Buy the cheap tyre inflator £8
Remove all plastic off, change plug to suit bike power plug. At least your giving best shot.

Your mate with the mouse is maybe nothing more than:

As most of us have not experienced fixing a puncture at the roadside....

ie. He just hasn't had a puncture, as he hasn't encountered the nail.

As to most of us haven't.... Speak for yourself, mate. You are right though, punctures are very rare. Annoying when they happen but still rare. In several years of running Wanders into Europe, I think we have had two, plus one leaking valve. I would guess at over 1,000,000 man miles. Rare, indeed.

Could not agree more, i had 3 punctures on a spanish trip and used the stop and go for the first and it failed would not seal, resorted to rats tails and they fixed it. i am not saying the stop and go kit is crap but as JohnnyBoxer has said, different tools for different applications.
